Goal of the Game
In this cooperative game, some of the players see the illustration of a scene taking place Before (Avant), while the other players see the scene taking place After (Après). Communicate together in order to understand everything that happened between the two illustrations.
Components
12 large illustrations and 6 investigation booklets.
The six investigations:
- The Sunken Door (La Porte engloutie)
- The Great Escape (La Grande Évasion)
- The Malfunctioning Attractions (Les Attractions détraquées)
- The 400 Blows (Les 400 coups)
- Night at the Museum (La Nuit au musée)
- The Mystery of the Orchestra (Le Mystère de l'orchestre)
Setup
- Split into two groups (the two groups do not have to be equal in size).
- Choose an investigation, take the two sheets that make it up, and place that investigation's booklet in the centre of the table.
- One group receives one sheet and the other group receives the other sheet. Be careful not to reveal the illustrations when you receive the sheets!
Gameplay
Begin the investigation!
Turn the first page of the booklet and read the first questions aloud (QUESTION 1).
Each group looks at its illustration and describes as much as it wishes of what it sees to the other group, in order to answer together the various questions on this page. To do so, you will need to be observant and use deduction.
It is forbidden to show your illustration to the other group until the game is over.
Solve the mysteries as you go
When, collectively, you think you have found the answers to the questions on this page, state them aloud and turn the page to see the solutions.
Then discover the questions on the next page, keep describing your illustrations in order to answer them, and so on...
Consult the hints
If you have difficulty answering a question, you can read the hints at the bottom of the page (these are written upside down).
Remarks
- The two groups do not know who received the Before (Avant) illustration and who received the After (Après) one; it is up to you to deduce this during the game.
- Between the two illustrations, anywhere from a few moments to a few days may have elapsed, depending on the investigation...
Tips
- For a first game, we suggest starting with Night at the Museum (La Nuit au musée).
- Remember to describe your illustration as much as possible. In Avant - Après, you can communicate freely, with no speaking order and no time limit.
End of the Game
When you have answered all the questions in the booklet, the game is over. Feel free to then give your illustration to the other group so that they can see the differences!
Authors' Note
In Avant - Après there is no score; the goal is simply to find the answers to the various questions together. No evaluation, just the pleasure of spending a pleasant time together. Enjoy your games!
Children's Variant
Reveal the two illustrations side by side. It is up to the children to succeed in answering the questions by comparing the two illustrations.
