53 cards (30 balloon cards, 18 basket cards, 5 target cards), 4 gear wheels, set of game instructions
Preparation
Shuffle all the cards and place them face down in a pile in the center of the table. Each player receives a gear wheel and places it in front of him. Extra gear wheels are taken out of the game.
How to Play
Play in a clockwise direction. The player who has most recently seen a hot air balloon in the sky may start. Draw a card from the pile and have a secret look at it.
What type of card is it?
-
A basket card. Great! Keep the basket card and place it face up in front of you. The number of adventurers in the basket indicates how many balloon cards of a matching color you need for the hot air balloon to take off. Watch out: There can always only be one hot air balloon for each animal species in front of you. If you draw a second basket card of this species you have to return the card face down to the center of the table.
-
A balloon card. Only the right balloon color matches each species of animal. The dogs have the red balloons, the cats the turquoise-blue ones and the badgers are brown ones. If in front of you there is a basket card that needs a balloon of this color, then keep the balloon card and place it next to the basket card. Unfortunately you can't use any balloon cards of different colors and have to return them face down to the center of the table.
-
A target card. The target card allows you to finish the game. As soon as a total of three of the five target cards are displayed face up on the table, the game is over. You can return the target card face up or face down on the table. Once placed face up, a target card cannot be turned back over.
The cards that have been returned to the center of the table may lie scattered around but not on top of each other.
Then it's the turn of the next player who secretly draws a card from the pile or takes any one of the cards scattered face down in the center of the table.
The Hot Air Balloon Is Ready for Lift Off
As soon as you have placed the same number of balloon cards as travellers shown in the basket next to the corresponding basket card, the hot air balloon takes off. Place the completed hot air balloon to one side. The other players should be able to see it. Each adventurer shown on the basket card will score one point at the end.
Now you can keep another basket card of this animal species if you draw one from the pile.
The Gear Wheel
If you want to repeat your turn you can use your gear wheel and draw one more card from the pile. Once you have used this option you have to return the gear wheel to the game box.
Example
Miriam at this point only needs balloons as she already has basket cards of each species in front of her. The pictured example shows the cards in front of each player, with the provision pile in the center.
- Miriam has already completed this hot air balloon. It scores three points.
- Philip collects balloons for his cats and dogs. He also needs a basket with badgers. But maybe Philip knows where there is a target card face down in the center and chooses to end the game with it.
- Philip is in the lead at this moment with four points. He has already used his gear wheel.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as three target cards are placed face up. Each player counts the adventurers on his completed basket cards. Adventurers still waiting in hot air balloons that are not completed do not count. The player who helped the most adventurers lift off wins the game. In case of a draw there are various winners.
Variations
Variation for Younger Globetrotters
The game will be easier if you play without the target cards and the game ends as soon as there is one card left in the pile.
Variation for Professional Globetrotters
You play according to the rules of the basic game, taking into account the following changes: you can place several basket cards of the same species in front of you and collect balloon cards for any number of hot air balloons at the same time. Watch out: When scoring any adventurers on basket cards that have not been completed, score minus points! So think carefully about whether you want to keep extra basket cards during the game in the hope of drawing the necessary balloon cards before the end of the game. The player with the most points wins the game.
Example:
Score of Sarah: -1, -2, +2, +3. At the end of the game Sarah has scored two points and Jonas just one point. So Sarah wins the game.
Score of Jonas: -3, -1, +2, +1, +2.
