Components

  • 1 game board, showing the "oven" in the middle and a scoring track around the edge
  • 1 pawn per player
  • Betting chips
  • 48 coal pieces, placed value-side down in the oven: 39 pieces marked with a value from 10 to 100, and 9 pieces marked with a devil instead of a value

Setup

Place the 48 coal pieces value-side down in the oven at the centre of the board. Between them, the 39 numbered pieces are worth 1,270 in total; the other 9 pieces show a devil. Each player takes a pawn and places it on the scoring track at the starting value of 200. Each player also takes a starting supply of betting chips.

A round is played in 4 phases.

Phase 1: The Devil's Bet

The players bet on how much coal any one player will be able to pull out of the fire this round, at most, without turning over a devil.

To place a bet, each player takes betting chips worth their intended stake into a closed fist. All players open their fists at the same time and place their stakes clearly visible in front of them, announcing the amount as they do so.

A player who currently owns no betting chips cannot bid.

If your own bet target is less than or equal to the highest amount of coal collected by anybody this round, your bet wins (paying out one or two times your stake — see Phase 3, Determine Winnings).

Phase 2: Pulling Coal From the Fire

Going in turn order, the player whose turn it is turns over one coal piece from the board. Every player gets exactly one turn per round.

If the coal piece shows a devil, that player's turn ends immediately. Any coal that player had already revealed and collected this turn becomes worthless, and is placed face down at the edge of the board together with the devil piece.

  • If other players had played a "Pact with the Devil" (see below), the player who just revealed the devil must now pay each of those players 50 in chips.
  • A player who owes this payment pays out as many of the pact-holders in full as they can afford, in order, and then the bank pays out the rest. Example: I have 90 chips and owe a total of 150. I pay out 50 to the first pact-holder in full and keep the remaining 40 for myself. The bank then pays out the other 100 owed.

If the coal piece shows a number, the player who is on their turn may choose EITHER to stop voluntarily and keep the coal they have revealed so far this turn (this becomes their coal result for the round), OR to turn over another coal piece and continue, and so on.

Phase 3: Determine Winnings

Every bet is now checked against the outcome, starting with the start player.

First, determine the highest amount of coal collected by anybody this round.

  • A player whose bet was higher than that highest coal amount loses their stake.
  • A player whose bet was less than or equal to the highest coal amount keeps their stake and wins one times their stake.
  • The player who wins with the highest bet placed this round keeps their stake and wins two times their stake instead of one. If the highest bet of the round is a losing bet, no double payout is made to anybody.

Bonuses:

  • Whoever has the highest coal amount in front of them receives betting chips worth 50.
  • Whoever has the most coal pieces in front of them receives betting chips worth 50.
  • A player can receive both bonuses at once.

Phase 4: Place the Pawn

Each player privately totals up all of their betting chips. They then move their pawn on the scoring track to the space that lies between the two marked numbers their total falls between. If a player's total exactly matches a marked number, their pawn goes on that space instead.

Pact With the Devil

Whoever stands alone in last place, OR whoever stands on the "0–50" space, makes a pact with the devil.

For as long as the pact lasts, the affected player(s) must reveal their chip total openly to the other players.

Preparing the Next Round

Push the coal pieces remaining in the oven together.

  • If the remaining pieces still overhang the inner rim of the oven, continue playing with only these remaining pieces (the pieces already used stay at the edge of the board).
  • Otherwise, reshuffle all 48 coal pieces and make them available again.

The new start player is the player to the left of the current start player.

End of Game

If, at the end of a round, any player has betting chips worth at least 1,600, the game ends. The player with the highest total value in chips wins.

In case of a tie, there can be multiple winners.
