Object of the Game
Carefully count the apples, pears and grubs on the cards to yourself, and name the exact number at the right moment – before the other players do. This gives you harvest cards. The player who collects the most harvest cards wins.
Materials
- 60 windfall cards
- 20 harvest cards
- 3 number chips
Game 1 – Off the Top of Your Head
Set-up
- Shuffle all 80 cards. Deal out an approximately equal number of cards to all players. Each player puts his cards in a face-down pile in front of him.
- Place all 3 chips (in the two player game, only the "1" and "2" chip) next to one another with the numbers face up in the middle of the table, easily visible to everyone.
How the Game Plays
The oldest player starts, then the other players follow clockwise.
On your turn, you flip over the topmost card of your pile in such a way that all players can see it at the same time, and put it face up in the middle of the table. The laid-out cards form a face-up pile there.
Counting to yourself, add up the apples, pears and grubs that you see as the windfall cards are played.
As soon as a harvest card is turned up, quickly grab a chip from the middle of the table. Depending on the picture on the harvest card, you are asked for the number of apples, pears or grubs in the face-up pile. The player who has grabbed the chip with the "1" is the first to guess how many of the objects asked for are in the face-up pile.
Example on the sheet: "These are two apples and one grub." – "Here you are asked for the number of pears." – "This time, it's about the number of grubs."
Note: Apples, pears and grubs on the harvest cards do not count!
After that, the player who has managed to grab the "2" chip takes his guess. If somebody has grabbed the "3" chip, he guesses last. Each guessed number may only be said once. Players without a chip don't guess.
Now you count how many apples, pears or grubs are actually present on the cards in the middle of the table. Whoever guesses correctly gets the harvest card and puts it face-up in front of him.
If there was no correct guess, the player who was closest to the actual number gets the card. In case of a tie, the player who has grabbed the chip with the lower number gets the card.
New Round
Remove the played windfall cards from the game. Now the winner of the previous round is the first to play his topmost card.
If a player runs out of windfall cards sooner than the other players, the other players give him windfall cards so that play can continue.
Ending and Winning the Game
The game ends after the last card has been played.
Now, each player adds up the harvest cards he has won. The player with the most harvest cards wins the game. There can be more than one winner.
Game 2 – You Are Supposed to Be 11 Friends
This variant is played with the same rules as in "Off the Top of Your Head," with the following modifications:
Set-up
- Each player lays any 2 harvest cards face up in front of him. Keep all the remaining harvest cards as the supply.
- Deal out the 60 windfall cards to all players in approximately equal numbers. Each player puts his cards face down in a pile in front of him.
- The number chips remain in the box.
How the Game Plays
The players turn over cards as described above and add up apples, pears and grubs separately.
If a player thinks that at least 11 of one kind (apples, pears or grubs) have been played, he slaps one hand as fast as lightning on the face-up pile in the middle. The one who was the fastest says which kind is represented in the pile at least 11 times. Then look at the cards and make an exact count.
Taking or Giving Up a Harvest Card?
- If the player was right, he gets a harvest card from the pile.
- If there are fewer than 11 items of the named kind in the pile, he puts one of his own harvest cards (provided he still has one) back into the supply.
Then play continues as described under New Round.
Ending and Winning the Game
This is the same as Game 1 (page 7).
