Components
- 55 Gaulic cards, 10 cards each for five different characters (Asterix, Obelix, Majestix, Getafix and Cacofonix), plus 5 Idefix cards (the dog)
- 50 Roman cards, of which 6 are actually Pirates
- 5 Scoring Aid cards (Wertung)
You'll also need paper and pencil to track the score after each round.
Preparation
Each player takes the ten cards of one character, one Idefix card and one scoring aid card. With fewer than five players, return any unused Gauls to the box.
Shuffle the 44 Roman and 6 Pirate cards together into a 50-card deck. Place this Roman deck face down in the centre of the table.
Course of Play
Turn one Roman card face up. Each player now chooses one of his Gaulic cards to play and places it face down on the table. When everyone has chosen a card, reveal them simultaneously. The highest Gaul played wins the Roman card and is discarded. The Roman card is placed face up in front of the winning player, in his score pile, which is always visible to all players. In case of ties, the card with the most Flasks of Magic Potion showing wins the Roman. The players who did not win the Roman return their cards to their hands — only the winning Gaul is discarded.
Turn over the next Roman card, and repeat until the Roman deck is gone or all players run out of cards.
Pirates
There are six Pirate cards, each of which may help one Roman to escape. They are:
- The Highest Ranking Roman Escapes (Ranghöchste);
- The Lowest Ranking Roman Escapes (Rangniedrigste);
- A Roman of Your Choice Escapes (Beliebiger);
- One Dekurio Escapes;
- One Zenturio Escapes; and
- One General Escapes.
In each case, the Pirate card is only activated at the end of the round, during the Scoring Phase.
Unlike capturing Romans, however, capturing a Pirate reverses the discarding of Gauls. That is, the Gaul which wins the Pirate is returned to the player's hand, but all other Gauls are discarded.
Idefix
Every player has one Idefix card. You can play your Idefix card instead of a Gaul. By doing so, you forfeit any chance of winning the currently face-up Roman card. Instead, you get to look at the top face-down card in the Roman stack. If you wish to keep that Roman card, place it in your score pile and discard Idefix. Otherwise, give it to any other player for his score pile and return Idefix to your hand. If the top card is a Pirate, you keep Idefix if you keep the Pirate, but discard Idefix if you give the Pirate to another player.
If two or more Idefixes are played at the same time, no one gets to look at the top Roman card — you all return Idefix to your hand.
If Idefix is your last card, you may not play it — discard it instead.
You cannot play your Idefix card when the face-up card is a Pirate.
End of a Round
When you're out of cards, sit out the rest of the round. When only one player has cards left, he gets one Roman card from the top of the Roman deck for each remaining Gaul in his hand (including Idefix, providing he's not the only card left). A Pirate counts as a Roman in this case: you must keep it, and do not get an extra card with your Gaul that took the Pirate. The round is then over.
Scoring
- Pirates remove one appropriate Roman each. If you do not have the Roman card called for, you lose nothing.
- Each individual card scores its value.
- Pairs, triplets and quadruplets receive bonus points, as listed on the scoring aid card.
Play four rounds. The winner is the highest scorer after the fourth round.
