The Assassin Bug
Written rules text (BGG item description):
The Assassin bug moves one space around the Hive. Or, instead it can use its special ability to remove an adjacent enemy piece that's not in a stack. To do this it moves on top of the enemy piece permanently removing both the enemy piece and the Assassin bug from the game. The Assassin bug cannot remove a piece your opponent has just moved or flipped.
Rules diagram (titled "Assassin Bug"):
- Assassin bug moves 1 space per turn BUT it must alternate:
- When on the ground level – climbs up
- When on the hive – climbs down
- OR
- Removes an enemy piece directly underneath itself back into the opponent's reserve.
- Cannot remove Queen Bee.
Discrepancy Between the Sources
The two sources do not describe the same Assassin Bug:
- Movement. The written text says the Assassin Bug moves one space around the Hive. The diagram says it moves 1 space per turn but must alternate: when on the ground level it climbs up, and when on the Hive it climbs down.
- Removing a piece. The written text says the Assassin Bug may instead move on top of an adjacent enemy piece that is not in a stack, permanently removing both that enemy piece and the Assassin Bug from the game. It cannot remove a piece the opponent has just moved or flipped. The diagram says it removes an enemy piece directly underneath itself, returning that piece to the opponent's reserve. It cannot remove the Queen Bee. The written text does not mention the Queen Bee, and the diagram does not mention the just-moved or just-flipped restriction.
The written text and the diagram cannot both be followed. Players should agree which version to use before play; this transcription does not choose between them.
