Setup

  • Shuffle the deck of cards.
  • Place them face down with the spinner, sand timer and Challenge Bell in the centre of the table.
  • If there are more than 6 of you, play in teams.
  • Divide the 90 Arrogance tokens equally between players (or teams).
  • Give each player or team a PASS! / CHALLENGE! token.
  • Decide how many rounds you would like to play – 3 rounds is a good place to start. A round consists of every player using the spinner.

How to Play

Decide who's going to play first. If this is you... Spin the spinner. If it lands on EASY or HARD, draw a card and look at the corresponding topic. Do not let your opponents see it. How many answers do you think you can list? Place that number of Arrogance tokens on the table. Can't list any? Then fool your opponents into thinking you can! The player to your left now gets to choose 1 of these 3 options:

1. UP THE ANTE!

Raise the stakes by adding some of your own Arrogance tokens to the table. The total number of tokens represents the number of things you will have to list if challenged. Remember that only the first player knows the topic!

2. PASS!

If you're feeling the pressure and want to chicken out of this topic, place your PASS! token on the table, along with 1 Arrogance token. You won't be able to ring the Challenge Bell, play or win any Arrogance tokens until the next topic is drawn. If only 2 players are playing, you can't PASS!.

3. CHALLENGE!

Think someone is bluffing? Ring the Challenge Bell and place your CHALLENGE! token on the table. A challenge can be issued by any player at any time. The last player to UP THE ANTE! now has to list the number of answers they have wagered against the timer – 30 seconds for an EASY topic and 60 seconds (2 turns of the timer) for HARD. The player who picked the topic reveals it to everyone and starts the timer for the challenged player. If they complete their list, they win all the Arrogance tokens from the centre. They also win 2 Arrogance tokens from the player who challenged them and 1 from any players who passed on that topic. However, if the challenged player fails, the challenger wins all the Arrogance tokens instead – including an additional token for each PASS!.

If UP THE ANTE! or PASS! is chosen, play continues with the next player having the 3 options as above, until a CHALLENGE! is issued.

After a CHALLENGE! has been resolved, the players take back their PASS! / CHALLENGE! tokens. The next player spins the spinner and takes a new topic card, following the same steps as above.

Head-to-Head

If the spinner lands on HEAD-TO-HEAD, select an opponent to face in a one-on-one EASY or HARD challenge.

BEFORE drawing a topic card, the 2 players take turns to UP THE ANTE!. When either player no longer dares to increase their wager, they ring the Challenge Bell – they cannot PASS!. Only players within the HEAD-TO-HEAD can issue a CHALLENGE!. If a player runs out of Arrogance tokens during a HEAD-TO-HEAD, the opposing player can either issue a CHALLENGE! or add more Arrogance tokens to the table and play the topic themselves.

The challenger takes the top card from the deck and reads aloud the EASY or HARD topic for their opponent to list. If successful, the challenged player wins the Arrogance tokens. They do not win any additional tokens from the challenging player. If unsuccessful, the challenging player wins the Arrogance tokens instead.

How to Win (and How to Lose)

After the agreed number of rounds, the player with the most Arrogance tokens is the winner.

If a player runs out of Arrogance tokens, they are out of the game. If a player controls all the Arrogance tokens at any point, the game ends and that player is the winner.

How to Deal with a Tiebreak

In the event of a tiebreak, a final topic is played. A player not in the tiebreak takes the top card from the deck and reads out the HARD topic. The tied players race to call out the first answer, and then take turns to list answers for that topic. If a player hesitates or cannot think of an answer, the opposing player wins.
