Aim
Win the highest number of Kudos Points in order to become the best project manager.
You win Kudos Points whenever you have completed the construction of a reach (a section between two locks) of the Canal de Garonne, when you have assembled a structure on the canal or built a riverside construction nearby. You may also win Kudos Points through managing the vineyards of the region; these will be added to your score at the end of the game.
Get Ready
Set up the game board at the centre of the table.
Each player gets 5 workers of the same colour with 1 matching score tracker and 2 cards.
Shuffle the rest of the cards and create a deck.
Set the card deck, the "lock" pieces and construction trackers to the side of the game board.
Place the score tracker on the "0" space of the scoreboard.
- 4 Player set up: Use the whole of the game board.
- 3 Player set up: The Fronton vineyards are not used.
- 2 Player set up: The Fronton Vineyards, the "Grisolles-Montech" section and the blue space for nearby riverside constructions are not used. Please refer to the special 2 Player Game Rules section at the end.
The player who has most recently seen a canal takes the first turn! Then you continue to play clockwise.
Note: When playing with 2 or 3 players, place the construction trackers across the sections of the game board which are not used in order to show clear boundaries to the game board.
Game Round
A game round always operates the same way. Players take turns in a clockwise direction.
Each player starts with 5 Project Points (PP), which he may freely decide to allocate to the following projects according to the key:
| Cost | Project |
|---|---|
| 1 PP | Move a worker forward 1 space |
| 1 PP | Play a card |
| 2 PP | Move a worker from the canal to the vineyards |
| 2 PP | Pick a card |
| 3 PP | Allocate a new worker to the canal |
| 3 PP | Build a riverside construction (blue spaces) |
| 4 PP | Move a worker from the vineyards to the canal |
| 4 PP | Build a lock |
On their turn, each player completes their project allocations and then the next player takes his turn.
For example (5 PP): If you choose to build a lock (4 PP), you may then play a card (1 PP) or move a worker forward 1 space on the canal (1 PP).
Pointers:
- You do not have to allocate all of your Projects Points (PP) on your turn but if you do not, the points are lost and cannot be used on your next turn.
- You may choose to allocate your PP to the same type of project, providing you have sufficient.
Allocate Project Points (PP)
Project Details
• Move a worker 1 space forward (= 1 PP)
You can move any worker already allocated on the canal, whether they match your colour or not.
You may move them forward several spaces by using several PP, providing the final space is free of workers or locks.
Towns count as spaces and can accommodate any number of workers.
Locks which have been set up on the game board always count as one space.
Note: in general, the symbol of the Southern Cross next to the project pictogram indicates that you are able to move workers of another colour.
Example: the purple worker moves forward 4 spaces.
• Play a card (= 1 PP)
You use one of the cards you have already in your hand for an immediate action. The card is then discarded.
•• Move a worker from the canal to the vineyards (= 2 PP)
You move one of the workers from the canal to any free space in a vineyard.
•• Pick a card (= 2 PP)
You pick the first card on top of the deck and include it to your hand. You may have an unlimited number of cards in your hand.
••• Allocate a new worker to the canal (= 3 PP)
You take a new matching colour worker from your stock and place it on a free space of the canal. If you have already allocated your 5 workers, you are not able to choose this project.
••• Build a riverside construction (= 3 PP)
You take one of your matching colour workers which has already been allocated on the canal and place it on a free blue space in order to build a riverside construction (reservoir, watermill, dam...).
When you choose this project, you instantly win 3 Kudos Points and move your score tracker accordingly on the scoreboard.
When you allocate a worker to a riverside construction you cannot move it again until the end of the game.
A blue space can only accommodate one worker.
•••• Move a worker from a vineyard to the canal (= 4 PP)
You move one of your workers from a vineyard to any free space on the canal.
•••• Build a lock (= 4 PP)
You take one of the "lock" pieces set aside from the game board and place it on a free space on a section of the canal which has not yet been built on.
When you choose this project, you instantly win 1 Kudos Point and move your score tracker accordingly on the scoreboard.
Pointers:
You cannot move a worker
- twice in the same turn, unless you move it forward several spaces.
- from the canal to the vineyard, then from the vineyard to the canal in the same turn.
- back to its original space from where this worker has just been moved over by another player on the previous turn.
You are only able to build a maximum number of locks between two towns, as indicated by the game board hints.
You are not able to build a new lock in a given section once a breakdown has been finalised.
Note: you are free to choose how to allocate your 5 Project Points.
Win Kudos Points
On the canal
The main object of the game is to win Kudos Points by achieving a majority holding of a section of the canal.
A section of the canal is defined by the number of spaces between two towns, between a town and a lock or between two locks.
A section is considered to be completed once all spaces of the section are occupied by workers.
The player who has allocated the highest number of workers in the completed section instantly wins Kudos Points for that number of workers, as indicated on the chart and moves his score tracker forward on the scoreboard accordingly.
| Workers | Kudos Points |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 |
| 2 | 2 |
| 3 | 4 |
| 4 | 6 |
| 5 | 8 |
| 6 | 10 |
| 7 | 12 |
| 8 | 15 |
If the number of workers is even between players, then they do not win any points and it is the next best player down, in terms of number of workers, who wins the Kudos Points.
If the score is even again at the next level down (as may happen with 4 players), nobody wins the Kudos Points.
Construction trackers must be placed alongside the section in order to close it down and indicate that final breakdown of the section has been finalised.
Once this is done, the next player to play is able to use his leftover Project Points and move the workers away from inside this section.
On a section with 5 workers worth 8 Kudos Points, there are 2 red workers, 2 yellow workers and 1 green worker. Therefore, green player wins!
Some sections may not be worth any Kudos Points. Here, red and yellow cancel each other out.
With a lock
By building a lock, using a card or 4 Project Points, you instantly win 1 Kudos Point.
It may be that when you build a lock, the section gets completed and therefore a breakdown must be performed.
The game board hints indicate the maximum number of locks which can be built between each town.
Once a section of the canal is complete, you are no longer able to build a lock there.
With a riverside construction
When you allocate a worker on a blue space to build a riverside construction (reservoir, watermill, dam), you instantly win 3 Kudos Points. However, keep in mind that this worker will remain there and cannot be moved again until the end of the game.
There are only 4 specific spaces on the canal for riverside constructions.
With a structure
Some cards allow you to build one of the two structures on the Canal de Garonne: either the Montech Water Sluice or the Cacor Canal Bridge.
This kind of move can only be achieved by the player holding the very last position on the scoreboard.
You play your card and place the structure on the specific space. You then move forward your score tracker on the scoreboard accordingly. It is a good way to get ahead of your opponents!
In the vineyards
A breakdown is performed on each vineyard at the end of the game.
The player, who has the highest number of workers placed on the vineyard, wins as many Kudos Points as the specific vineyard can accommodate (Fronton vineyard: 8, Chasselas vineyard: 4, Bruhlois vineyard: 6).
If the number of workers is even between players, then they do not win any points and it is the next best player down, in terms of number of workers, who wins the Kudos Points.
If the score is even again at the next level down (as may happen with 4 players), nobody wins the Kudos Points.
Therefore, some vineyards may not be worth any Kudos Points.
Recap
To recap, in order to win Kudos Points (KP), you must:
- hold a majority of workers on a given section of the canal,
- build a lock (1 KP),
- build a riverside construction (3 KP) with one worker bound to that space,
- build a structure (5 KP) by playing a specific card and being the last player on the scoreboard,
- hold a majority of workers on a vineyard at the end of the game.
Win the Game
When a breakdown of the last section of the canal has been performed, the game then stops.
Then you proceed with a breakdown on the vineyards, as per rules stated above.
The player who stands with the highest number of points on the scoreboard wins the game! Therefore he becomes the greatest Project Manager of the Canal de Garonne, successor to the great Pierre-Paul Riquet.
When scores are even between players, the player who has the highest numbers of workers on the canal wins the game.
When the numbers of workers are also even between players, it is then impossible to decide a winner between the project managers. You will just have to play again!
2 Player Game Rules
When playing with 2 players, The Fronton Vineyards, the "Grisolles-Montech" section and the blue space for nearby riverside constructions are not used.
Place the construction trackers across the sections of the game board which are not used, in order to show clear boundaries to the game board.
Set up the game board as described and proceed to the following finishing touches: a third "virtual" player joins the game.
Place one of the third colour "worker" pieces on each town of the game board and place the matching score tracker on "0", on the scoreboard.
Both players will be able to dispose of these workers during the game. The third "virtual" player will be able to win Kudos Points as per normal game rules.
However, the "virtual" player does not come into account when applying the rules to build a structure. You just need to be the last one on the scoreboard and play the specific card.
At the end of the game, if the "virtual" player scores more points, then neither player wins!
The Cards
- You may move a worker but only the one (whatever colour) forward a number of spaces which should be less or equal to the number indicated on the card.
- You may move one of your workers which has already been placed on the canal, anywhere on the canal providing the space is free. You may also complete this move further by using 1 Project Point per added space.
- You may move one of your workers which has already been placed on the canal, over to a free vineyard space.
- The symbol of the Southern Cross on the card indicates that you are able to move any worker (including your opponents'), providing it is already on the canal, to a free vineyard space.
- You may move all of your workers from a vineyard to a free canal space.
- The symbol of the Southern Cross on the card indicates that you are able to move any worker (including your opponents'), providing it is already on a vineyard, to a free canal space.
- You may build a lock on a free canal space, according to the number of locks allowed between two towns. You instantly win 1 Kudos Point.
- You may build one of the two structures (the Cacor Canal Bridge or the Montech Water Sluice) providing you are the last player on the scoreboard. Place the structure on the specific space and instantly win 5 Kudos Points.
