Expansion Icon

The cards in the The Drowned City Investigator Expansion can be identified by the expansion icon before each card's collector number.

Additional Rules and Clarifications

Agatha Crane

As a parapsychologist, Agatha Crane walks a fine line between scientist and true believer when confronted with the mythos. At deck creation, either her Seeker or Mystic version may be chosen. Both versions have unique deckbuilding; once chosen, you cannot switch to another version. Unlike print-and-play parallel investigators, you must use both the front and back of Agatha's chosen investigator card for the entirety of the campaign.

Alert

Each time an investigator fails a skill test while attempting to evade an enemy with the "alert" keyword, after applying all results for that skill test, that enemy performs an attack against the evading investigator. An enemy does not exhaust after performing an alert attack. This attack occurs whether the enemy is engaged with the evading investigator or not.

Myriad

An investigator may include up to three copies of a player card with the myriad keyword in their deck (by title), instead of the normal limit of two copies. Additionally, when you purchase a myriad card for your deck, you may purchase up to two additional copies of that card (at the same level) at no experience cost.

Researched

Researched is a keyword ability that appears on some higher-level cards (most prominently on Seeker cards).

To be included in an investigator's deck, a card with the Researched keyword must first be "identified" or "translated" by performing a task on the lower level version of that card and recording the result in your Campaign Log.

  • You can only include a researched card in your deck by upgrading it from its lower level version.
  • You may only include a researched card in your deck if, in your Campaign Log, you have recorded the completion of the task described in the lower level version of that card.
  • After an investigator has completed that task and recorded it in the Campaign Log, any investigator in that campaign may upgrade the relevant card following the normal rules for upgrading player cards.

Seal

When a card instructs a player to seal a token, that player must search the chaos bag for the specified chaos token and place it on top of the card, thereby sealing it. If there is a choice of which token to seal, the card's controller chooses. If the specified token is not in the chaos bag, the card cannot enter play.

A sealed chaos token is not considered to be in the chaos bag, and therefore cannot be revealed from the chaos bag as part of a skill test or ability.

When a sealed chaos token is "released," it is returned to the chaos bag and is no longer considered sealed. If a card with one or more chaos tokens sealed on it leaves play for any reason, any chaos tokens sealed on it are immediately released.

Some cards (with or without the seal keyword) may also have abilities that seal one or more chaos tokens as part of their effect. This is done following the same process as above: searching the chaos bag to the specified token, removing it from the chaos bag, and placing it on the card. If the specified token is not in the chaos bag, the effect fails.

Specialist Cards

Some of the player cards in this product belong to a new group of Neutral cards known as Specialist cards. Specialist cards can be identified by their black color and by the absence of any class icon.

Each Specialist card also contains text that specifies one or more Traits, e.g. "Miskatonic, Scholar deck only." An investigator must have one or more of the indicated Traits printed on their investigator card in order to purchase that Specialist card.

Additionally, an investigator must follow all of their deckbuilding options and restrictions when looking to purchase a Specialist card for their deck.

For example: Dakota Garofalo is a specialist Ally asset with the text "Detective, Hunter, Wayfarer deck only" in its text box. Only investigators with the Detective, Hunter, and/or Wayfarer traits may purchase this card, regardless of other deckbuilding access. For example, Marion Tavares does not possess any of the specified Traits, and therefore cannot include this card in her deck. However, Michael McGlen with the Hunter trait may purchase Dakota Garofalo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can George Barnaby's reaction ability trigger when he discards cards during the upkeep phase?

A. Yes. Any time you are playing as George and you would discard a card from your hand, you may choose to activate his reaction ability (provided that it has not already been activated that phase). This includes when discarding cards during the upkeep phase.

Q. If I trigger George Barnaby's reaction ability during the upkeep phase, then realize I am still over my hand limit, do I have to discard down to my hand limit?

A. Yes. If your hand limit changes during the upkeep phase, and as a result of the change the number of cards in your hand exceeds your new hand limit, you must discard cards until the number of cards in your hand does not exceed your new limit.

Q. Can I include a Specialist card in my deck that matches one or more of my investigator's Traits, even if that card is prohibited under my investigator's Deckbuilding Restrictions?

A. No. An investigator's Deckbuilding Restrictions prevent that investigator from adding any such cards to their deck, regardless of if they possess a Trait indicated by the Specialist card.

Q. What class of cards do Specialist cards count as for the purposes of Lola Hayes's investigator abilities?

A. Specialist cards are a type of Neutral card. Therefore Lola Hayes can be in any role and still play them, commit them, and trigger their abilities.

Q. What kinds of additional actions does Captivating Performance allow me to perform?

A. The available action types are activate, draw, engage, evade, fight, investigate, move, play, and resource. In order to trigger Captivating Performance, you must have performed 3 different actions in a row from that list.

As an example, if you play a card, gain a resource, and take a fight action, you have satisfied the triggering condition on Captivating Performance, and may exhaust it to take a fourth action which cannot be used to play a card, gain a resource, or fight.

If one of your actions involves multiple action types—such as playing a card with a bold Fight action designator—you choose which action type is contributing to Captivating Performance's triggering condition. For example, if you play Improvised Weapon, upon playing that card, you choose if it counts as a play action or a Fight action for the purposes of Captivating Performance.

Q. If I use Dimensional Vortex to set aside enemies at a location, and that location leaves play before the round ends, what happens to the set-aside enemies?

A. When Dimensional Vortex would return 1 or more enemies to a location when that location is no longer in play, those enemies are discarded to their respective discard piles instead; they are not considered defeated.

Q. What happens when I use Cosmic Revelation's ability while an investigator has a card with an undefined cost (-) in their hand?

A. Cards with an undefined cost (-) are not considered to have an even or odd cost while in hand. As such, they cannot be revealed nor played via the effects of Cosmic Revelation.

Q. How often can I resolve the seal keyword on Bulwark, Misdirection, and Obscure?

A. When you meet the triggering conditions for Bulwark, Misdirection, or Obscure, and there is at least 1 chaos token of the listed type in the chaos bag, you may resolve the seal keyword on that asset. If there is no chaos token(s) of the listed type(s) in the chaos bag, then there are none to seal and you cannot resolve that keyword. You may only resolve the seal keyword once per instance of meeting its triggering condition.

Q. If my investigator is usurped by the Homunculus, what happens to the trauma suffered by my original investigator?

A. Any physical and mental trauma suffered by an investigator who is usurped by the Homunculus is transferred to the Homunculus. The Homunculus begins each scenario with all trauma suffered by the investigator it has usurped.
