How does Intercept work, and who chooses which ships take the hits?

If any intercept result is rolled, the defender intercepts once per battle: you take one hit for each fresh defending ship, and damaged defenders don't add to the count. You, the attacker, choose which of your ships take them. Intercept hits only hit your ships, never your buildings.
