Solo Playing Rules
Choose a scenario card or draw one at random. With each scenario, you portray a different character with its own objectives (see Scenario card diagram).
The rules in the base game apply with the following modifications:
- There is no turn #0. Use the starting conditions indicated on the scenario card. Move the surplus worker marker by the number of huts on the starting region.
- Use the 4-player action wheel.
- Skip Phase 2: Order of play.
- During exploration, if the new region touches the scenario's starting region, it does not have to be adjacent to a second region.
- During Phase 6, you must purchase a card and rotate two cards. If you cannot purchase any card, you lose the game.
- If the end-of-game condition is reached during Phase 6, you still complete the phase.
- If you run out of units in your color, you may use other colors. All your units are considered to be of one color for any applicable rules. You are still limited to 5 action discs and three citizens per region.
Warning! Some scenarios start with zero citizens. In that case, a single rebel will trigger a war of independence and cause you to lose the game.
Scenario Card
The scenario card for each character shows the following elements, labelled on the card diagram:
- Scenario #: the number of the scenario.
- Scenario name: the name of the character you portray.
- Description: the character's title (for the example card, "The Alpinist").
- Game length: shown on a stopwatch icon.
- Starting conditions: shown on a chest icon. The setup is specific to each scenario and replaces turn #0.
- End conditions: shown on a bell icon. This specifies when the game ends.
- Victory conditions: shown on a trophy icon. This is the ranking criteria table, with three score bands and a rank for each.
- Ranking criteria: the criterion that is scored for the ranking table.
- Score obtained: the score you record for the band you reached.
- Rank obtained: the rank that appears next to the score.
- Rebellion! (game lost): the bottom row of the table, marked by a tiki-face icon. A rebellion means the game is lost.
- Check appropriate boxes to keep track of your adventures: a row of boxes beside each band and the rebellion row, for recording your result.
Example: Scenario 03, Edmond Taniar (The Alpinist)
Scenario card printed text for the example, transcribed as shown on the card:
Starting condition: indicates what you start the game with. The setup is specific to each scenario and replaces turn #0.
Edmond Taniar starts with one citizen and 2 florins on the desert region.
End-of-game condition: specifies when the game ends.
Edmond Taniar ends the game when he purchases his fifth evolution card.
Victory condition: indicates your level of success for this scenario with a rank. At the end of the game, look up the score obtained based on the ranking criteria. Your rank appears next to the score.
Edmond Taniar wants to explore mountains. Each explored region containing mountains earns 1VP. With a score above 15VP, you are ranked first. From 10 to 15VP, you are ranked second. Below 10VP, you are third. In case of a rebellion, you lose the game!
The example's victory table lists the bands as follows: above 15 (rank 1), 10 to 15 (rank 2), below 10 (rank 3), and the rebellion row (game lost).
