Solo Rules

You can enjoy beachcombing and running the aquarium even if you are alone! Basically, you can follow the setup and rules for solo play in the base game. Then, add all beachcombing related components and rules introduced in this expansion set as well.

However, apply the following changes:

  • At the beginning of the game, randomly open two event cards and pick one of them.
  • During setup and the next round preparation phase, only place beachcombing tokens on fish spaces. Do not place beachcombing tokens on advertising spaces.
  • When you stop on a fish space, you will also take the beachcombing tokens placed there.
  • During the next round preparation phase, always gain 2 funds from the standby track.
  • During the next round preparation phase, just like the fish tokens, take all beachcombing tokens from the beach board and return it to the box. Then, replenish the beachcombing tokens on the beach board along with the fish tokens. Remember that beachcombing tokens are not placed in the advertising spaces for solo play.
  • When you have 4 or more garbage tokens, gain 5 victory points when calculating the Contribution to Cleaning up the Environment in the final score calculation. Else, lose 3 victory points. Either way, you still gain 1 victory point for each garbage token.
  • Other beachcombing tokens are calculated in the same way as when playing with multiple players. As a guide, if you can get more than 100 victory points, your Aquarium will be full of customers!

Setup

Important: In this game, you may draw wooden tokens from the cloth bag. The shape of the tokens differs depending on the type. If you want to play more strictly, you can play with the randomizer cards method described on page 8.

Important: The following rules are for 3-4 players using with standard rules. The rules for 2 players game, advanced rules, and solo play rules are described on page 9 and beyond.

Follow the setup as if playing the base game, but add/change the following points.

Play area Setup

  1. Use the beach board from this expansion instead of the original fair board. From this point onwards, all explanations regarding "fair board" in the base game will be read and applied as "beach board".

Important: Beach boards basically have the same functionality as fair boards. However, there are some differences in icons and effects as described in the following explanations.

  2. Similar to how you put the fish tokens in the cloth bag, put the beachcombing tokens in the beach cloth bags according to the number of players.

    • In a 3 player game: Remove the following 19 beachcombing tokens and return them back to the box. Place the remaining 57 beachcombing tokens into the beach cloth bag.
      • Sea Glass x3, Bottles x4, Garbage x5, Shark Teeth x1, Starfishes x2, Conches x2, Clams x2
    • In a 4 player game: Put all beachcombing tokens into the beach cloth bag.
  3. After placing the fish tokens on the fish spaces on the beach board, take out the beachcombing tokens from the beach cloth bag and place it on the beach board in the same way. However, beachcombing tokens are placed not only on each fish space, but also on each advertisement space.

Important: After this setup, each fish space will have 1 fish token and 1 beachcombing token, while each advertising space will only have 1 beachcombing token. No beachcombing token should be placed on the sea board.

Player Setup

  1. In addition to the aquarium board, each player receives 1 wooden crate board and 1 garbage bag tile to be placed side by side in front of them.

  2. Shuffle all feeding event cards from both the base game and this expansion. The feeding event card you have at the start of the game is now chosen by yourself instead of being distributed randomly. After determining the turn order, place the feeding event cards equal to the number of players plus 1 in a place where everyone can see them. Starting with the last player (whose owner token is higher on the standby track), choose one of the feeding event cards that are lined up.

  3. Return the unused wooden crate boards, garbage bag tiles, and feeding event cards (including the one that was not chosen by any player) back to the box.

Gameplay

Follow the rules as if playing the base game, but add/change the following points.

1. Obtaining the Beachcombing Tokens (Action Phase)

On your turn, if you move your owner token to a space with one or more beachcombing tokens, you must do both of the standard action of that space (take and place fish tokens if it is a fish space, or advertise if it is an advertisement space) and take all beachcombing tokens on that space.

Place the beachcombing tokens you took on the corresponding space in your wooden crate board. However, the garbage tokens must be placed on your own garbage bag tile.

Beachcombing tokens can be obtained before or after the standard action of that space.

Beachcombing Tokens

At the end of the game, you will gain victory points from beachcombing tokens on your wooden crate board and garbage bag tile.

Generally, once a beachcombing token is placed on the wooden crate board or garbage bag tile, it will not be removed from there. Additionally, as a general rule, beachcombing tokens are not placed on the aquarium board or the sea board.

In other words, players will work on two independent tasks at the same time: "filling the aquarium board with fish tokens" and "filling the wooden crate board and garbage bag tile with beachcombing tokens".

2. Gaining Funds from the Standby Track (Action Phase)

When you advance your owner token to the lowest empty space on the standby track, you gain the amount of funds shown on the left side of that space.

This funds is gained even in the final round, but not when deciding your turn order in the game setup.

Similar to the base game, you cannot move employee token, make additional purchases, or achieve milestone cards in the turn when your owner token is advancing to the standby track. Hence, you cannot immediately utilize the funds you gain here to do something.

3. Replenishing Beachcombing Tokens (Preparation Phase)

After replenishing the fish tokens, randomly draw beachcombing tokens from the beach cloth bag and place one on each fish spaces and advertising spaces in the beach board (do this even if there are fish or beachcombing tokens from the previous round on those spaces).

End of Game and Scoring

In addition to the base game's scoring, the victory points for the beachcombing tokens on the wooden crate board and the garbage bag tile are calculated as follows (use the score sheet included in this expansion set).

And the player with the highest victory points wins the game.

1. Wooden Crate Board

Victory points are given for beachcombing tokens on your wooden crate board as follows:

TokenNameVictory Point
Sea GlassSea Glass2 victory points per token.
BottleBottle5 victory points per 2 tokens. If there is 1 leftover or if you only have 1 token will not provide any victory point.
Shark ToothShark ToothEach token will provide as many victory points as the number of sharks in your aquarium board. Whale sharks do not count as sharks.
StarfishStarfish1 victory point per token.
ConchConch1 victory point per token.
ClamClam1 victory point per token.
Memories of the Seas SetMemories of the Seas SetEach set of 1 starfish, 1 conch, and 1 clam will provide additional 7 victory points.

Example: You have 3 starfishes, 2 conches, and 3 clams on your wooden crate board. This gives you 1 victory point each, so you will gain 3 + 2 + 3 = 8 victory points. In addition, 2 sets of Memories of the Sea are completed, so you also gain 7 x 2 = 14 victory points. Thus, these tokens give you a total of 22 victory points (8+14).

2. Garbage Bag Tile

Victory points are given or taken for garbage tokens on your garbage bag tile as follows:

  • Garbage: 1 victory point per token.
  • Contribution to Cleaning up the Environment: The player (if there are multiple tied players, all of them) who has collected the most garbage tokens gains 5 victory points. While the player (if there are multiple tied players, all of them) with the fewest garbage tokens loses 3 victory points. In the case that all players have the same number of garbage tokens, everyone gains 5 victory points.

Randomizer Cards Rules

If you want to play a little more strictly, you may play without drawing tokens from the cloth bag. Instead, use the fish token randomizer cards and the beachcombing token randomizer cards. The two type of cards' composition are the same as the corresponding tokens' composition. Follow the rules as if playing as usual, but add/change the following points.

  • In the setup, do not put the fish tokens in the cloth bag. Separate it by its type and put them near the fair board or beach board. From this point onwards, this is called the supply.
  • Similarly, do not put the beachcombing tokens in the cloth bag. Separate it by its type and put them in the supply.
  • Within these randomizer cards, the cards that have "4+" written on the bottom right are only used when playing with 4 players. When playing with 2 or 3 players, return the card labeled "4+" back to the box.
  • Shuffle each randomizer card's type separately and place them face down near the beach board. Prepare a space next to each deck for the respective randomizer cards' discard pile.
  • Instead of taking out a fish or a beachcombing token from each cloth bag, draw a card from the top of each randomizer cards deck. Take the type of fish or beachcombing token from the supply based on the cards' illustrations and put it in the fish or advertising space accordingly. Place the drawn randomizer cards face up in the corresponding discard pile.

Note: the fish token randomizer cards can also be used when playing the base game of "Aqua Garden".

Two-Players Rules

If you are playing this expansion set with two players, "Lucy" will join the game. Similar to the base game, Lucy is not controlled by any player.

Basically, the overall game will follow the setup and rules for a three players game (though, the player's setup only follows the setup for two players).

Lucy will also follow the same rules as the base game's two players rules.

However, apply the following changes:

  • Randomly reveal 3 feeding event cards. Starting from the last player (who has their owner token higher than the other player in the standby track) each player takes 1. Lucy does not have a feeding event card.
  • Prepare a wooden crate board and a garbage bag tile for Lucy.
  • If Lucy stops at a fish space or an advertisement space, in addition to the base game rules, take all the beachcombing tokens on that space and place it to Lucy's wooden crate board (if those are garbage tokens, take and place it in Lucy's garbage bag tile instead).
  • Lucy does not gain any funds from the standby track.
  • Lucy does not gain any victory points. However, in the final score calculation's Contribution to Cleaning up the Environment, include Lucy's amount of garbage token when determining the player with the most and fewest garbage tokens (Lucy will only affect this ranking decision. Ignore any victory points that Lucy would have gained or lost).

Advanced Rules

This expansion also includes 3 new fish tokens for the advanced rules.

Advanced Rules Supplementary

  • When advanced fish tokens are moved to the sea board, the cost of additional purchases for those fishes are the same as normal fishes, 2 funds per token.
  • Until you are familiar with the game, it is recommended that you use only 3 types of advanced fish tokens. You may use all three new types from this expansion set, or combine them with those from the base game. If you want, you may as well try to increase the number of advanced fishes used in the game.
  • You may also use the new advanced fishes from this expansion set even when you only play the base game (not playing with the Beach Combing rules). However, the octopus can only be used when you play with the Beach Combing rules.

Octopus

Octopus tokens can be obtained by paying 1 bottle token from your wooden crate board, not by funds. The octopus tokens are designed so that it can hold the bottle. Give the bottle you used for payment to the octopus. This bottle loses its function as a beachcombing token and cannot be counted towards scoring at the end of the game. If you move that octopus to the sea board, move it while holding the bottle.

When calculating the final score, each Octopus gives you 2 victory points for each sea glass on your wooden crate board.

Leatherback Sea Turtle

Unlike the normal sea turtles, leatherback sea turtles can exist in tanks without seaweed.

When calculating the final score, each leatherback sea turtle gives you 2 victory points for each sea turtle on your aquarium board.

Sea Anemone

When calculating the final score, each Sea Anemone gives you 2 victory points for each Small Fish in the same tank as it.

Important: A small fish can be inserted in the sea anemone token, but it is purely for the game's cuteness and does not have any specific intention related to the gameplay. Even if you fit a small fish into an anemone, they are calculated as separate tokens. For example, when one of them is moved to the sea board, it is not necessary to move both tokens to the sea board together.
