19 animals (= wooden cylinders), 1 game board, 4 stacking picture templates, 1 die, 1 pouch, 1 set of instructions

  • 1 game board
  • 4 stacking picture templates
  • 1 pouch
  • 1 die
  • 19 animals (wooden cylinders)

Preparation

Place the game board in the middle of the table. Each player receives a stacking picture template and places it in front of them. Extra templates are placed back in the box. Place all the animals in the pouch and keep the die handy.

How to play

Play in a clockwise direction. The person who most recently saw the ocean starts.

The first player takes three animals out of the pouch. If the first player happens to draw a crocodile, the crocodile is placed back into the pouch and a new animal is drawn.

The other players are shown the three animals that were drawn. In the center of the game board the player should now stack each of the three animals largest to smallest, being careful to follow the order shown on the lighthouse template. Important! The pictures of the animals must always be placed face down; players must then use their memory skills to remember which animal is in which spot.

Example: Julie drew these three animals from the pouch: dog, lion and turtle. The lion is all the way at the bottom, on top of it comes the dog, and then the turtle.

Then the next player takes their turn and drawing one animal from the bag, continues building the animal tower placing the animal in what they believe to be in correct order.

Animal stacking

Blindly draw one animal from the pouch (no peeking!). Show and tell the other players which animal you drew. Then stack your animal in the correct place in the animal tower.

Important stacking rules:

  • Decide what you think is the correct position for the animal you drew.
  • You can use both hands.
  • Always place your animal in the animal tower with the picture facing down.
  • Carefully remove the upper portion of the animal tower and set it gently on the game board.
  • Place the animal cylinder you drew from the pouch.
  • Then replace the top half of the animal tower back on top of the tower.
  • When moving the tower parts, players are not allowed to peek at the animal pictures.
  • You need to be careful that the animal tower doesn't fall down when you stack!

Example: Tim draws the sheep from the pouch. The animal tower already has the lion, the dog and the turtle. The sheep needs to be put between the lion and the dog. Tim picks up the top two animals, puts the sheep (with the picture facing down) on the lower animal (lion), and then places the other two animals (dog and turtle) back on top. Now the following animals are in the correct order in the animal tower: lion, sheep, dog, and turtle.

Crocodile

If you draw a crocodile you must remove an animal from the animal tower. Roll the die. Count the number of dots and then start counting from the bottom up on the animal tower. Remove the animal in the corresponding number rolled position from the animal tower. Place the animal that was removed back into the pouch; be sure that no one sees which animal it is!

If the die shows a number that is higher than the number of animals on the tower then you don't need to remove an animal and the crocodile is removed from the game and placed back in the box.

Example: Paul draws a crocodile and rolls a 2. He needs to take the second animal up from the bottom out of the animal tower (sheep).

Example: Paul draws a crocodile and rolls a 5. But there are only four animals in the tower so he doesn't need to remove an animal.

The crocodile tile is removed from the game and the next player takes their turn.

End of the game

The crazy animal memory & stacking game can end in three different ways!

1. Stop stacking!

The animals in the tower must always be in the correct order. If it's your turn and you think that the order of the animals is wrong then you can end the game and check the tower. To do this you need to call out "stop stacking!"

Now carefully take the animals off the tower one by one and place them face up next to the game board. All players compare the order of the animals with their stacking template.

  • Is the order of the stacked animals wrong? Great! You paid close attention and won the game!
  • Is the order of the stacked animals right? Oh no! You didn't pay close enough attention and the animal tower was taken down for no reason. The other players won the game.

2. The animal tower falls over

If parts of the tower or the whole thing fall onto the table during stacking, then the game is over. In this case the player who caused the collapse loses and all the other players win.

3. The animal tower is finished

Did you stack well and finish your animal tower? Great! But are all the animals in the correct order in the tower?

  • If the player whose turn it would have been after the last stacking move doubts the order then they call "Stop stacking!" (See stop stacking!)
  • If the player whose turn it would have been after the last stacking move doesn't doubt the order then all players have won together.

Tip

Continuously refer to your stacking template before each round as this shows the correct stacking order.
