You start with 3 transports in the Launch Bay and can build 3 more, plus a fighter, a science vessel and a heavy cruiser (6 transports in total). Once built, a ship stays yours for the rest of the game. If a damaged heavy cruiser is upgraded, its shield damage does not transfer to the upgrade tile.
