Set Up
- Each player starts with 1 body and 1 head card. Place them on the play area connected vertically. Return any extra body or head cards to the box.
- Adjust the deck as follows, depending on the number of players. (Primary set of 10 cards = 1 each of ribbon, scarf, accessories, and mud.)
- 2 players: Primary set + 10 random cards
- 3 players: Primary set + 20 random cards
- 4 players: Primary set + 30 random cards
- 5 players: Primary set + 40 random cards
- 6 players: Use all cards
- Shuffle the deck well and place it in the center of the play area.
- Determine a starting player.
- Play goes clockwise from the starting player.
Play
The active player can elect to do one of the following (A, B, or C):
A. Draw 2 + Add 1 Draw 2 cards from the deck and look at them secretly. Add 1 of the 2 cards between the body and head of your alpaca. Discard the other card into a common Discard Pile.
B. Add the Discard Pile Add ALL CARDS from the Discard Pile between the body and head of your alpaca.
C. Negotiation Negotiate to trade some of your cards with another player's cards. You have 1 minute maximum for negotiation. It does not matter how many cards are involved: 1:1, 2:1, 0:2, 5:1, etc. If negotiations do not go well and you cannot agree on a trade before your 1 minute time limit expires, the negotiation fails. You can then do either A or B instead, but you cannot attempt a new negotiation this turn.
Calculating the Score
- First, remove any incomplete illustrations. In example 1, the partial scarf and ribbon would be removed.
- Next, the alpaca with the longest neck is awarded 4 pts. The second longest neck is awarded 2 pts. In example 2, if this is the alpaca with the longest neck, it gets 4 pts.
- Exceptions: If there is a tie for longest neck, each tied player gets 3 pts. In this case, no points are awarded for second longest. If there is a tie for second longest neck, each tied player is awarded 1 pt.
- Calculate points for fashion cards:
- A complete ribbon is worth 6 pts (3 x 2).
- Scarves are worth 2 pts per card. Example 3b shows a 4 pt scarf.
- Pendant accessories are worth 1 pt each, but if your alpaca wears all 4 different pendants, it is awarded 5 bonus points!
- A muddy neck, as in example 3d, is worth -1 pt.
- The player with the highest point total wins!
Optional: Baby Alpacas
A baby alpaca should be played next to the player's main (parent) alpaca. Baby alpacas do not count toward the parent alpaca's neck length.
In 2 to 5 player games, the baby alpacas can be used as random cards in the deck or can be left out. Always use the baby alpacas in 6 player games.
Scoring Baby Alpacas:
- A male baby alpaca is worth 3 pts if the parent wears a complete scarf.
- A female baby alpaca is worth 3 pts if the parent wears a complete ribbon.
- If the required fashion cards are not completed, the baby is worth 0 pts.
- More than one baby alpaca can be played by the same player.
