Game Overview

Agree to Disagree is a party game that puts opinions and disagreements back into the fun zone.

It's okay to Agree to Disagree!

  1. The game is played in rounds. Each round a new player is the moderator (the mod) and selects a topic to promote disagreement at the table.
  2. All players, including the mod, form a secret opinion to Agree (outline heart) or to Disagree (broken heart) with the topic.
  3. Each player attempts to form a connection with another player they might secretly disagree with.
  4. The final two players must predict their connection.

Points are scored each time a connection is made. At the end of the game, tally your score to determine the winning player.

Components

  • 8 Secret Opinion Devices
  • 8 Prediction tokens
  • 74 Category cards
  • 1 Topic Inspiration card

Setup

  1. Give each player a device and a prediction token.
  2. Separate the Category cards, by color, into two decks.
  3. The player who most recently settled a dispute is the mod for the first round of play. Place the two decks in front of the mod.

How to Win

The goal of the game is to score the most points.

  • The active player scores 2pts for forming a successful connection with another player.
  • The mod scores 1pt for each successful connection.
  • The final two players score 2pts if they accurately predict their final connection.

Playing With 2/3 Players?

The 2 and 3 player game has a unique set of rules found on the back page of the rulebook. See 2/3 Player Rules below.

Playing the Game

The game is played in rounds. Each round consists of four phases.

Phase 1: Select a Topic

Flip one category card faceup from each deck. The player to the mod's right chooses one of the six total categories listed on the two category cards. The mod must suggest a topic that fits within the chosen category. Once a topic is suggested, the two cards may be flipped facedown and returned their respective decks.

The mod's responsibility is to suggest a topic within the chosen category. The mod's objective with topic selection is to maximize the potential that disagreements will occur.

Example: The category "Dessert" is chosen and the mod selects the topic, "Key Lime Pie."

How tightly a topic fits within a category is based on the discretion of the mod. As the mod, it's okay to steer an uncomfortable category back into something more comfortable.

After a topic has been selected and announced to the table, proceed to Phase 2.

More About Topics

Choosing a topic is a fun part of the game! For first time players, we've included some additional inspiration you can use when you're the mod.

Topic Inspiration (the Topic Inspiration card):

  • Be Obvious. The topic can be the category itself.
  • Be Yourself. The topic can be something YOU like.
  • Be Declarative. The topic can stated AS IF it's a fact.
  • Be Opinionated. The topic can be a perspective.
  • Be Humble. Use another player's topic suggestion.

Example Category = Animal. (Topic inspiration below)

  1. Be Obvious. Topic = Animals.
  2. Be Yourself. Topic = My pet dog Gigi.
  3. Be Declarative. Topic = Dogs are better than cats.
  4. Be Opinionated. Topic = It's adorable when people look like their pets.
  5. Be Humble. Topic = Choose a suggestion from the crowd... Joe Exotic, hunting, wombats, trading wood for sheep, or jerky.

Phase 2: Form an Opinion

All players (including the mod) form their secret opinion of the topic by placing their device facedown with their selected opinion toward the center of the table.

  • Toward the center of the table signifies that you feel positive toward the topic (Like, Love, Dig, Fancy, Wild Smitten-Kitten, Sure Why Not). This is the outline heart (Agree).
  • Toward the center of the table signifies that you feel negative toward the topic (Dislike, Hate, Can't Stomach, Detest, Burns my Biscuits, Everything Sucks). This is the broken heart (Disagree).

Once all players have formed their secret opinion and their device is flipped facedown, proceed to Phase 3.

How to Form Your Opinion

You are entitled to form your own opinion based on your feelings in the moment.

  1. You must form your opinion honestly, even if you feel just slightly negative or positive toward the topic.
  2. You must choose Agree (outline heart) or Disagree (broken heart).
  3. You must not hint at or reveal your secret opinion.

If possible, you should try to form your opinion as it fits the particular category.

Example: The category is "Hobbies", and the topic is "Jogging". Perhaps you're recently on an exercise kick, but you couldn't imagine anyone running for fun. In this case, you would answer with Disagree (broken heart).

Phase 3: Form a Connection

The first player clockwise from the mod starts the round as the active player and chooses another player to form a connection with.

The active player's objective is to form a connection with an eligible player they will secretly disagree with. Specifically, if you answered Agree (outline heart), then you want to find somebody at the table who answered Disagree (broken heart) or vice versa to establish a successful connection.

To form the connection, physically push one device into another device, without changing the orientation of either device. Then evaluate the connection.

Evaluating the Connection

  1. If each player has a different secret opinion, the two devices will achieve a flush coupling as pictured. The active player scores 2pts and the mod scores 1pt. Scores are tracked by distributing a category card with the corresponding number on the back of the card. A flush coupling is a SUCCESS and signifies two players hold different secret opinions. Score points, you Agree to Disagree!
  2. If each player has the same secret opinion, the coupling will not be flush and will have a gap showing two equal signs. No pts are awarded with this result. A coupling with a gap is a FAILURE and signifies that both players simply agree. Something to talk about at last!

After Evaluating the Connection

Decouple both devices from the connection and return each device (as they were oriented) back to its owner. The previous active player is now ineligible from participating in future connections.

As long as there are more than two eligible players remaining, the previous passive player now becomes the new active player and attempts to form a connection. It is possible for the mod to be the active player.

The final two players of the round must predict the result of their connection before connecting. Proceed to Phase 4: The Final Connection.

Helpful tip: If you're ineligible for future connections, place your scoring cards or hand covering your device to help remember that you are no longer eligible this round.

General Rules for Devices

  • Do not change your opinion during the round, and do not rotate or change orientation of any device during the round. If you do this on accident, reset your device as it was oriented based on your opinion. If you cannot remember your opinion, state this aloud and the group will decide your eligibility for the remainder of the round.
  • Do not flip your device faceup during the round because it would reveal your opinion to others.
  • Do not connect more than two devices.
  • Do not connect a device from anywhere but the front of each respective device (front of device is the side oriented toward the center of the table).

Etiquette

  • Do not reveal information about a player's opinion encoded onto their facedown device, even though you may now know their secret opinion.
  • At the end of the round, it is fun to reveal opinions and discuss the topic. It's fun to share and learn about different opinions, and please be respectful to your fellow players.

Phase 4: The Final Connection

When exactly two eligible devices remain, those two players must predict their connection (either "Agree" or "Disagree") before physically forming the connection.

  1. The final two players should independently orient their prediction token corresponding to their predicted result of the final connection. Prediction tokens should be considered hidden information and simultaneously revealed to maximize fairness.
  2. Once both players are ready, evaluate the final connection by physically connecting the two final devices. A player who correctly predicts the outcome of the final connection gains a 2pt card. A player who incorrectly predicts the outcome gains no pts. The mod gains a 1pt card if the coupling was flush regardless of the resulting predictions.

End of the Round Cleanup

Rotate the mod one player clockwise by placing the two category card decks in front of them. Continue the game proceeding through Phases 1-4 again. End the game once each player has been the mod for a round. The player with the most points is the winner.

Tiebreaker: A tie is broken by playing another full round where each player involved in the tie plays again as the mod. Repeat as necessary until there is a winner.

If you had fun play again and continue keeping score or not!

Understanding The Components

  • SUCCESS: Flush coupling examples (diagram caption).
  • FAILURE: Gap coupling examples (diagram caption).
  • Faceup / Facedown: the two device orientations shown in the diagram.

2/3 Player Rules

With 2 players, your cooperative goal is to form a successful connection on four consecutive topics. Rotate the mod each round as usual and evaluate your connection on each topic. Use all 8 devices included to track your progress.

With 3 players, your cooperative goal is to form a successful connection on three consecutive topics. The mod does not form an opinion, but rotates each round. Use 6 total devices to track your progress.
