Do I need to own any of the track my goods travel over?
The designer confirmed this is legal and the rulebook lets players use others' railroads.

No. You may move a cube entirely over other players' completed links, and there is no requirement to own the first link out of a city. Each link's owner gains the income. The designer calls it a general tactic (for sniping goods or pushing an opponent's income up) though rarely wise.
