51st State (3–6 Players)

This map has no hexes. Hexes are replaced by states, and routes and connections are replaced by circular spaces. Players place their own disks directly onto these circles, each of which spans two states. Every circle connects at least two different states, and some connect to more (simply check whether the circle lies over a state). Unless stated otherwise, the standard Age of Steam rules apply. Here, the states coloured yellow, blue, red and purple are called "Colored States" (CS). They correspond to the cities of the base game.

Setup

As usual, place 2 goods on each CS. These are equivalent to the cities of the base game.

Track Building

You may place up to 3 disks. The cost you pay is the sum of all of the costs listed below.

  • $1 per disk on a plains state (green).
  • $2 per disk on a brown state.
  • If a river is drawn in a state that shares a border with it, add an additional $1.
  • If there is a CS, add an additional $1.
  • Blank (grey) states in the north-east are free.

Urbanization

A player may establish a new administrative centre in any state by placing a New City tile there. A New City tile may not be placed directly adjacent to a CS or to an existing New City tile. If a state is too small to hold a New City tile, a new administrative centre cannot be established in that state.

Translator's note: The rules give no specific guidance on which states may be urbanized, so players must agree on this before the game begins. (Designer's answer on BGG.)

Goods Transport

As in the base game, passing through a CS or delivering to a CS advances the income track by 1. Some states have an airport symbol. Using the location of this symbol requires one additional locomotive level. If you meet the locomotive level required for the movement and complete the delivery, income increases by 1.

Example: Suppose you want to transport 1 yellow good from Washington state to Alaska, passing through Oregon and California. (You own the link between Washington and Oregon and the link between Oregon and California.) As in the base game, reaching the airport in California requires 1 locomotive level, and delivering the good to Alaska requires one more locomotive level.

Note: In this expansion, other players' disks may not be used.

Old Europe (3–6 Players)

This map has no hexes. Hexes are replaced by countries, and routes and connections are replaced by circular spaces. Players place their disks directly onto the small circles on the borders between countries, and onto the large circles at the centre of the major countries, which are difficult to pass through. Unless stated otherwise, the standard Age of Steam rules apply.

Setup

Place 1 good in each coloured country. Coloured countries that have a large circle in their centre (France, Poland, Russia, Turkey and Bulgaria) receive 1 additional good.

Track Building

A player may place up to 3 disks per turn onto the small circles on the borders. Only players who lost the turn order auction in the turn order phase (other than the player in 1st place) may place disks on the large circles! Any number of players may place disks on a large circle (the disks simply stack). The number of players whose disks may occupy each small circle is limited to p−2, where p is the number of players. The cost of a small circle is $2+x per location, where x is the number of players already on that small circle. The cost of a large circle is $3+x per location, where x is the number of players already at the centre of that country.

Urbanization

A New City tile (government) may be placed in every country except Switzerland, Albania, Denmark and the Baltic States. Sicily and Scotland are treated as separate countries from the mainland (there is a small circle between them and the mainland).

Goods Transport

As in the base game, transport takes place between two coloured countries. If a large circle or a New City tile (government) is present in a country, one additional locomotive level is required to pass through or deliver to that country.

Translator's note: Income is also increased by +1 in this case. The following points are not stated in the original rules and are clarified by the designer's answers on BGG:

  • Other players' disks may not be used for transport.
  • The coloured destination country does not need your disk on its large circle.
  • When passing through a country, your disk must be on that country's large circle.

Transport Examples

  • Transporting a red good from Austria (black 1) to Romania (black 3) requires locomotive level 1, because there is no large circle on the route.
  • Transporting a blue good from Ireland (white 1) to France (white 3, white 4) requires locomotive level 2. Passing through England, which has a large circle, costs 1; arriving at the blue France costs 1.
  • Transporting a yellow good from Portugal (white 2) to Ireland (white 1) requires locomotive level 5. Passing through Spain costs 1; passing through France costs 2 (coloured plus large circle); passing through England costs 1; arriving at the yellow Ireland costs 1.
  • If a black New City tile were placed in Germany, transporting a blue good from France (white 3, white 4) to Poland (black 2) would require locomotive level 3. Passing through Germany costs 2 (coloured plus large circle); arriving at the blue Poland costs 1.
