Miami 2030 (1 Player)

Terms

  • Cubes, goods and people all mean the same thing. The exception is the blue cube, which represents flooding.
  • A flooded hex is a hex that holds a flood cube.
  • There are three exits:
    • Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport (purple)
    • Amtrak Train Station (red)
    • Miami International Airport (yellow)
  • A district is one of the pink hexes with a blue circle. There are 10 districts.
  • The 50 hexes of the map are divided into three areas by the locomotive track drawn on the map:
    • Miami North: the 1 hex directly above the locomotive track.
    • Miami East: the 10 hexes running down from the right side of the north hex.
    • Miami West: the 39 hexes to the left of the north hex.
  • Beach hexes are hexes that are next to the sea and are not districts. There are 12 in total:
    • Miami North: 1 of its hexes is a beach hex.
    • Miami East: 5 of its 10 hexes are beach hexes.
    • Miami West: 6 of its 39 hexes are beach hexes.

Setup

Remove the black cubes and the black cities from the game.

Place one flood cube (blue cube) on each beach hex in Miami West and Miami North (7 in total). The hexes that receive a flood cube at setup show a blue cube icon, so they are easy to find.

Set the remaining blue cubes aside. These are water, and they represent flooding each round. They are used in the Round Marker Advance / Flooding phase.

Choose a difficulty (Easy, Medium or Hard) and take the matching set of people (cubes). Place the cubes at random in the districts shown below.

Easy: 6 purple, 6 red and 3 yellow. Place 2 in each district in Miami West and 1 in each district in Miami East.

Medium: 7 purple, 6 red and 4 yellow. Place 2 in each district in Miami West, 2 each in Biscayne Campus and Normandy Shores Golf Course, and 1 in each remaining district in Miami East.

Hard: 7 purple, 7 red and 5 yellow. Place 1 in Cape Florida Park and 2 in each other district.

Victory Condition

Evacuate all of the people from the map without going bankrupt.

How to Play

Action Selection

You may choose only the Locomotive, Urbanize, Engineer, Coast Guard (new action) and Fire Fighter (new action) actions.

Laying Track

You cannot lay track on a hex that holds a flood cube. You also cannot lay track on a district.

Laying costs:

  • Flat or beach hex: $2.
  • Flooded hex: $4. This may be laid only when the Coast Guard action is chosen.

Action: Urbanize

Place 1 new city tile on any district. If there was a person on that district, place that person on the new city tile.

Action: Engineer

Resolve as normal, but you cannot lay track on a hex that holds a flood cube.

Action: Coast Guard

You may lay track on a flooded hex. Then the flood cube that was on that hex is placed on that track tile.

Goods Transport

Each time a cube passes through one flooded hex, the income it earns is reduced by 1. Income can be reduced to a minimum of 0 and never goes negative.

Note: A district is pink so that it does not match any cube colour. No cube can be delivered to a district until it has been urbanized and given a colour.

Note: Delivering a person (cube) to an exit increases income. Delivering a person to an urbanized district does not increase income, but the person still leaves the map as usual.

"If we 'evacuate' Jim to Aunt Sally's house, the flood will just catch up with him again, so of course she won't pay us."

Action: Fire Fighter

A cube may be transported across flooded hexes without the income reduction penalty.

Round Marker Advance / Flooding

In rounds 1–5, place 1 flood cube on any one beach hex that is not yet flooded. This is done regardless of whether the hex has been urbanized, and flood cubes are never placed in districts.

In rounds 6–9, place 2 flood cubes, one on each of two different beach hexes that are not yet flooded.

If you must place a flood cube and all beach hexes are already flooded, place it on any hex adjacent to a beach hex. Again, do not place flood cubes in districts or on exits.

In case you were not counting: by round 10 there should be 20 flooded hexes!

New York Subway (3–6 Players), 2022 Revised Edition

Note: If the copy of Age of Steam you own uses locomotive pieces instead of discs, this map may be quite difficult to play, but trying it is very welcome!

Contents

  • 12 green cubes.

Terms

  • A city and a skyscraper mean the same thing.
  • A town and a construction site mean the same thing.
  • A cube and an underground station mean the same thing.

Setup

Each player chooses one colour. With 4 or fewer players, only yellow, red, blue and purple are used. The 5th player uses black, and the 6th player uses green.

Each player takes 5 discs of their colour and uses them as normal to show income, shares, locomotives, actions and turn order.

Each player takes a number of cubes of their colour (these are the underground stations) equal to the number of rounds played × 2. Return the rest to the box. For example, in a 3-player game the game lasts 10 rounds, so each player takes 10 × 2 = 20 cubes of their colour.

Put 20 each of the yellow, red, blue and purple discs and 16 black discs into the bag. Then draw discs from the bag at random and stack 3 discs on each skyscraper, and stack 2 discs on each construction site. A stack of discs is called a stack.

Do not use the goods display. Return it to the box.

How to Play

Track Laying: Excavation and Subway Station Construction

Instead of laying track, you excavate. Everywhere the base game says "lay track," it now means "excavate."

Rather than placing a track tile face up as normal, you place a track tile face down (black side) to show that the hex has been excavated, meaning a tunnel has been dug.

Translator's note: If your track tiles are not black on the back (that is, both sides show track), it is better to substitute some other marker.

On your turn you may excavate up to 2 hexes and build up to 3 underground stations (placing up to 3 of your colour's cubes).

Once a hex has been excavated, anyone may place an underground station (a cube of their colour) on any one side where that hex meets a skyscraper hex (or construction site hex). Placing an underground station on the border between the two hexes connects the skyscraper (or construction site) to an underground tunnel.

Each side of a skyscraper hex (or construction site hex) may hold no more than [number of players − 2] underground stations. Also, a player may not place more than one of their own underground stations on the same side. (However, each hex side may hold up to one of your stations, as long as the limit above is respected.) So in a 3-player game each side can hold only one station, while in a 5-player game up to 3 players may place stations on the same side.

Excavation Cost

The excavation cost of each hex is $2. This includes construction sites.

Underground Station Construction Cost

If you are building the first station on that side of a hex, the underground station construction cost is $1. Otherwise, first pay $1 to the bank, and then pay $1 to each player who already has an underground station on that side.

Reminder: each player may build only one station per side.

Action: Urbanize (Construction Start)

If an underground station already existed between a newly urbanized hex and an adjacent hex, that underground station is not removed and remains on the board.

Action: Engineer

Move one of your underground stations to another place on the board. Your stations may be moved only in this way.

Goods Transport

Discs (skyscraper floors) are transported, not cubes. However, only the disc (floor) on the top of each stack may be transported. Each skyscraper takes on the colour shown on its hex. When a skyscraper floor is transported, it is not returned to the bag. Instead, it is inserted at the bottom of the destination stack.

How Transport Works

Skyscraper floors may be transported only using your own network. Your network means your underground stations connected through underground tunnels; all of them are considered to be connected by tunnel. (Imagine your underground stations connected by lines of your colour.)

Each underground station may be used only once per transport. As usual, each skyscraper or construction site may be passed through only once. Likewise, a floor (disc) stops at the first skyscraper whose colour matches it.

End of Game

In addition to the normal scoring, each skyscraper gives victory points to the players who have connected underground stations to it. Each underground station is worth 1 victory point per disc in the skyscraper. In other words, for each skyscraper you score (its height × the number of your underground stations adjacent to that hex) victory points.

Example: A skyscraper is 6 discs high. The red player has placed one underground station on one side of its hex, so that is 6 discs × 1 station = 6 victory points. The yellow player has placed underground stations on 3 sides of its hex, so that is 6 discs × 3 stations = 18 victory points.
