The Mediterranean

Mediterranean: 3 to 5 players, 4 recommended.

Apply all base rules except the changes listed here.

Setup

Place 4 Goods cubes each in Rome and Athens. Place 2 Goods cubes in each other City.

Play / Track Laying

Choose one of the following:

  • Lay 0 to 3 pieces of track on land.
  • Lay 0 to 2 pieces of track on land and secure (own) 1 sea link. Each sea link is a sea route shown by a blue dotted line that connects City/Town to City/Town across the Mediterranean. A sea link is considered to connect directly to a Town, even though the dotted line does not extend inside the land hex. So you can connect a Town to a sea link without upgrading the Town to a City or laying track from the Town to the dotted line.

To secure a sea link, place 1 track marker/player disc on the circular space on the middle of the dotted line. Each sea link can be owned by only 1 player.

Track Laying Costs

  • Single land track: $2
  • Sea link: $4

Action: Engineer

The cost of securing 1 sea link this round is free instead of $4.

Goods Transport

Each secured sea link (that is, one with a track marker/player disc on it) is treated like a normal completed link. That is, when it is used in transport, it requires an engine level of 1, and it increases the income of the link's owner by 1.

Normally a link is not considered complete unless track reaches the white circle at the centre of the Town hex. However, a secured sea link is considered to connect directly to the Town, so it may be used to transport goods even though the dotted line does not reach the white circle at the centre of the Town hex.

Example: Another player owns the sea link connecting Heraklion and Benghazi, and you own the land link connecting Benghazi and Alexandria. With an engine level of 2 or higher, you may transport 1 yellow Good from Heraklion through Benghazi to Alexandria.

End of Game

Each sea link is worth 3 victory points.

Airlines

Airlines: 4 to 6 players, 5 to 6 recommended. 2021 revised edition.

Apply all base rules except the changes listed here.

Setup

Place 4 Goods cubes each in Paris and New York. Place 2 Goods cubes in each other City.

Play / Track Laying

Lay 0 to 3 pieces of track on land. (For securing air links, see "Engineer" and "Flight Planner" below.)

Track Laying Costs

  • Single track on flat terrain: $2
  • Single track on mountain: $4

Action: Engineer

Secure (own) 1 air link for free. (See "Securing Air Links" below.)

Action: Production, then Flight Planner

Choose one of the following:

  • Lay 0 to 3 pieces of track on land. (That is, do not use the Flight Planner's ability.)
  • Lay 0 to 2 pieces of track on land and secure 1 air link for $4. (See "Securing Air Links" below.)

Securing Air Links

Each air link is an air route shown by a black dotted line that connects City to City.

To secure 1 air link, place 1 track marker/player disc in the cell of the briefcase table that matches the two Cities at the ends of the link being secured. Each air link has two cells on the briefcase table, one in the row/column position and one in the column/row position, so each air link can be owned by 2 players (one player may also occupy both cells).

Example: A track marker/disc is placed in the cell where the Paris row meets the Mexico column. This means that one air link between those two Cities is secured.

Goods Transport

Each secured air link (that is, one with a track marker/player disc in the briefcase) is treated like a normal completed link. That is, when it is used in transport, it requires an engine level of 1, and it increases the income of the link's owner by 1. If an air link owned by 2 players is used, the active player chooses which player's airline is used to transport the goods (that is, which player's income is increased by 1).

End of Game

Each air link is worth 2 victory points.
