Components

  • 109 cards (654 questions)
  • 1 reference card (karta pomocy)
  • 1 board
  • 1 round marker
  • 4 player pawns
  • 8 notepads (2 in each colour)
  • 1 hourglass (60 seconds)
  • 1 rulebook

You will also need a pen for each player.

Setup

A. Place the board in the middle of the table.

B. Form teams of 2 players. Players from the same team sit opposite each other.

C. Place the round marker on the round track, on the space numbered 1.

D. Place the hourglass next to the board.

E. Each team chooses a pawn and places it on the board, next to the space numbered 1.

F. Each player takes a notepad in the colour of their team's pawn.

G. Place the cards in a stack next to the board.

How to Play

  1. One of the players draws a card and reads question no. 1. Then they turn the hourglass.

  2. Each player writes down a maximum of 5 answers in their notepad. Answers should be 1–2 words, expressed as nouns, adjectives or verbs, and where possible unambiguous and precise.

Write your answers so that your team partner cannot see them.

  3. When someone notices that the sand in the hourglass has run out, stop writing.

  4. Each team scores in turn. One player from the team reads out their answers. If their team partner gave the same answer, they must say so and mark it in their notepad. The team scores 1 point for each matching answer and moves its pawn accordingly on the score track. Then the next team scores.

New Round

After every team has scored, a new round begins. Move the round marker to the next space. Put the used card into the box. One of the players draws a new card, reads question no. 1 and turns the hourglass, and so on.

Note: put used cards into the box so that they do not get mixed with the remaining cards. After you have used all the question no. 1 cards, take the whole deck again and play the question no. 2 cards, then the question no. 3 cards, and so on.

End of the Game

The game ends when:

  • a team scores at least 30 points, or
  • the 9th round has been completed.

The team with the most points wins. If teams are tied on points, they play additional rounds until the winners are determined.

What Is a Matching Answer?

Matching answers are answers that refer to the same object, activity or emotion and are on a similar level of generality. They do not have to be worded exactly the same way. For example, for the question "What can be the cause of domestic arguments?", the answers "money" and "household budget" are matching. However, for the question "What things are needed to build a house?", the answers "hammer" and "tools" are not matching, because a tool can be a hammer, a screwdriver, a drill and so on.

Disputed cases are decided by all the players together. Remember, the point is to have fun!

Example: "What do you associate with a computer?"

Maciek reads out his answers and Kasia marks the matches. Maciek's team (Maciek and Kasia) scores 3 points in total. "Screen" and "monitor" are treated as matching (they refer to the same object). However, the answers "internet" and "browser" are not matching (they refer to two different things).

(The source shows the example as two notepads. Maciek wrote: Internet, Games (matched), Keyboard, Mouse (matched), Monitor (matched). Kasia wrote: Mouse (matched), Hard drive, Browser, Computer game (matched), Screen (matched).)

Adult Cards

Cards with questions intended for adult players are marked in red. Before the game you may shuffle them together with the other cards, or set them aside.

5- or 7-Player Game

One of the teams has 3 players. 2 of the players share the same notepad and together brainstorm the associations.

Variants

After you are familiar with the basic rules, we suggest the following variant, which adds variety to the game. The way of playing changes depending on the round number. In every round the limit of 1 minute for writing answers (hourglass) still applies. The reference card, which contains a short description of the rounds, is useful for this variant.

Rounds 1, 3, 5 and 7: Matching or Not (Dopasowani albo nie)

Each player writes a maximum of 5 answers. The team scores 1 point for each match (as in the basic game).

Rounds 2 and 9: Most Matching (Najbardziej dopasowani)

Each player writes any number of answers. Only the team that has the most matches scores 1 point for each match (the other teams do not score in this round). If there is a tie, all the winning teams score.

Round 4: Matching Gamblers (Dopasowani hazardziści)

Each player writes a maximum of 5 answers. Players in a team additionally bet on how many matches they will have. They must agree on a shared number and write it in their notepads before time runs out. If they hit the number, they score an additional 1 point for each match (for example, if they have 3 matches, they score 6 points).

Round 6: 100% Matching (Dopasowani na 100%)

Each player writes a maximum of 5 answers. Additionally, each player (on their own) circles 1 answer that they are certain will be matched. If the same answer is circled by both players of the team, they score an additional 1 point for each match (not only for the circled answer).

Round 8: Matching Letter (Dopasowana litera)

Each player writes a maximum of 5 answers. Players may give each other hints by saying the first letter of each of their answers.
