All the Deadly Sin cards are divided equally among the 3 decks: 6 of each in the Hell I deck, 3 in Hell II and 2 in Hell III. The 3 different card backs allow you to build the deck, as indicated during setup.

Setup

Separate the Deadly Sin cards by type. Choose the types of Sins you want to play with according to the number of players. They can be chosen randomly or according to the players' preferences, it does not matter. Put the other types of Sins back in the box.

Divide the chosen cards into three decks according to their backs. Shuffle each deck separately. Each player draws one card from the Hell I deck, looks at it secretly, and puts it face down in their reserve. Each player takes a Score card and places it beside them.

Reveal the first 5 cards of the Hell I deck and place them in the center of the table.

Shuffle one Last Judgment card into each deck, matching the card backs. Place the Hell III deck in the center of the table, the Hell II deck on top of it, and finally the Hell I cards. This forms the Deadly Sins draw pile.

Place the Abyss of Souls and a number of Stones of Forgiveness corresponding to the number of players near the revealed Deadly Sin cards.

(An illustrated example of setup for a 3-player game is shown in the rulebook.)

Object of the Game

You will try to reach the best possible score by collecting various Deadly Sins. Do not sink into excess, nor into total indifference. From time to time, you will have to feed the Abyss of Souls to influence the end of the game and win Stones of Forgiveness, which prove very useful when counting points.

Turn Sequence

Counter-clockwise, starting with the player who has most recently sinned, each player must choose between two actions:

  • Take all the Deadly Sin cards of one type from the center of the table and add them face down to their reserve.
  • Take all the Deadly Sin cards of one type from the center of the table and add them face down onto the Abyss of Souls board. In this case, the player takes one Stone of Forgiveness, if any remain.

Players may not look at the cards in their reserve or at those in the Abyss of Souls. At the end of each turn, more cards are revealed to replace those that were taken. There must always be 5 cards in the center of the table.

Last Judgment cards do not represent a Deadly Sin and cannot be taken. They simply remain on the table to reduce the number of cards available to the players.

Example of a Turn

On her turn, Margaux can take 2 Envy cards, 2 Wrath cards, or 1 Sloth card. She can also decide to put them in the Abyss of Souls. In that case, she can take a Stone of Forgiveness if any remain. Margaux chooses to add the 2 Envy cards to her reserve. She reveals 2 new cards, which she adds to the cards available in the center of the table. The next player will be able to choose between 3 Wrath cards or 1 Sloth card. The Last Judgment card will stay on the table until the end of the game, and reduces the number of possible choices for all players.

End of the Game

The game ends immediately as soon as the 3rd Last Judgment card is revealed. Players then sort the cards in their reserve, and those in the Abyss of Souls, by Sin. Each type of Sin earns players points according to the number of cards present in their respective reserves.

To determine the winner, you must first calculate the points of the Abyss of Souls. Do not take into account the Stones of Forgiveness still present. If the total of the Abyss of Souls points is greater than 7, then the winner is the player with the most points; otherwise, the winner is the player who accumulates the fewest points.

Before totaling the points of the cards in their reserves, players must place their Stones of Forgiveness on the different types of cards collected, with a maximum of one Stone per type of Sin. Each stone in a player's reserve counts as an additional card when counting the points for that type of Sin. It is impossible to use a stone for a type of Sin that you do not own. Excess stones are ignored.

In case of a tie, the player with the most cards wins the game. If the tie persists, the player who has the most different types of Sins wins. If there is still a tie, the players concerned share the dissolution of their souls.

Example of Scoring

In the Abyss of Souls, there are 6 Envy cards, 2 Gluttony, 1 Sloth and 1 Wrath. That makes -6 +3 +1 +1 = -1 point. So the winner will be the player who accumulates the fewest points.

Margaux collected 2 Envy cards, 4 Sloth, 3 Lust, and 1 Wrath, as well as 2 Stones of Forgiveness. To reduce her score, she decides to place 1 Stone on Lust and 1 on Sloth. That makes 3 -3 -1 +1 = 0 points.

However, if the Abyss of Souls had accumulated more than 7 points, Margaux could have placed 1 stone on Envy and 1 on Wrath to score 6 -1 +6 +3 = 14 points.

Game Variant: Penance

This variant minimizes randomness by allowing each participant to play the same number of turns. The rules are identical to the standard mode, except for a few points:

During setup, the first player flips their Score card to the red side, as a reminder. Take the Penance cards corresponding to the Sins used in the game, shuffle them and place them at the bottom of the Deadly Sins draw pile.

At the moment the third Last Judgment card is revealed, the players' turns continue until the player to the left of the first player finishes their turn. If the third Last Judgment card is revealed during that player's turn, then the game ends immediately.
