Goal

Have more castles than your opponent when the Banner deck is exhausted, or own 5 different Titans during the game.

Setup

  • Shuffle the Banner cards and form a face-up Banner draw deck.
  • Shuffle the Throne Room cards, draw one and place it in front of you, in your play area.
  • Form a Castle deck and take 2 Castle cards, which you place face-up in your play area.
  • Determine the starting player at random.
  • Take the first 6 Banner cards, without revealing them, and create a 3x3 square representing the Alkane, starting with the space marked with the letter A, then continuing clockwise, leaving the diagonal empty of cards as shown in the setup diagram.

Your personal area consists of:

  • your influence area (1);
  • your Throne Room and your Council (2);
  • your Castle cards (3).

The common area consists of:

  • the Castle reserve (4);
  • the Banner draw deck (5);
  • the discard pile (6);
  • the Alkane square (7).

The setup diagram and suggested organisation during play are shown in the printed rulebook (page 1, figure captions: "Setup diagram and suggested organisation during the game").

Icons

The printed rulebook uses icons, which are rendered in this transcription as follows:

  • Castle (château icon): written as "castle" or "castles".
  • Hourglass: the "End of game" effect (printed as "En fin de partie").
  • Card icon (black card): the "During the game" effect (printed as "Durant la partie").
  • Recruitment arrow (down arrow over a base): the "On recruitment" effect (printed as "Au recrutement").
  • Pose icon (hand placing a card into a slot): the "Pose effect" activated when a Character is placed next to your Throne Room (printed as "effets de pose"). Where the printed text reads "Au recrutement" next to this icon, it is transcribed as "On recruitment".
  • Victory laurel (castle with laurel): "wins the game instantly" where printed.

Judgment call: the printed rulebook does not contain a legend for these icons; the mapping above is taken from the printed labels that accompany each icon.

Turn Sequence

On your turn:

  • Take the first card of the Banner deck without looking at or revealing its Character face.
  • Place it on one of the empty spaces of the Alkane square, respecting the placement constraints described below.
  • Take the card or cards by following the capture rules.
  • RECRUIT or INFLUENCE.
  • Complete the card square if 1 or 0 cards remain.

Your opponent then plays their turn.

End of Game

As soon as the Banner draw deck is empty, the game ends. The person currently playing finishes their turn, then each player activates their end-of-game effects. The player with the most castles wins the game.

ATTENTION: it is forbidden to look at the Character face of a card unless you are performing a RECRUIT action.

Completing the Card Square

Proceed exactly as in setup when creating the Alkane square, placing any remaining card on the space marked A (see the setup diagram).

Placement Constraints

You may place the card you drew on an empty space of the Alkane square, orthogonally adjacent to any other Banner card already in play, respecting the size of the square, namely 3 cards by 3 cards.

The square is said to be "floating": it may move across the play area as cards are placed and taken, as long as its theoretical size is always respected (3 cards high by 3 cards wide).

Figure caption (page 4): the diagram shows the different spaces available for the Raptor Banner in this configuration.

Capture Constraints

  • If you place your Banner card adjacent to a card of the same Banner, you must take back the Banner card you placed and all the cards of the same Banner that follow one another, that is, adjacent orthogonally, forming a continuous path.
  • If you place your Banner card adjacent to one or more cards of different Banners, choose one of those Banners and take back all the cards of that Banner present in the Alkane square.
    • Note: in this case, you therefore do not take back the Banner card you placed.

Clarification:

  • If you place your Banner card adjacent to a card of the same Banner and to a card of a different Banner, you must take the cards of the same adjacent Banner forming a continuous orthogonal path.

Figure captions (page 5):

  • Placing 1 Feline card, which allows you to take 5 Feline cards: the card placed, and the adjacent orthogonally and consecutive Feline cards.
  • Placing 1 Feline card adjacent to 1 Ursid card and 1 Raptor card, with capture of the Raptor cards.

Recruit

Look at the Character face of the card or cards Banner that you have just taken. Choose 1 Character and place it in your Council, adjacent to one side of your Throne Room card, and activate any pose effects.

  • You may not recruit a Character that you already own, nor have more than 4 Characters.
  • On the other hand, you may own as many different Titans as you wish. They are not placed in your Council (see the Titan card rule).
  • As soon as you recruit your 5th different Titan, you win the game instantly.

Clarifications:

  • If, finally, you do not want to or cannot recruit 1 Character from among all those revealed, discard your cards, without effect.
  • Their effects do not apply retroactively. They activate when the conditions indicated on the card are met and you own them in your Council.
  • If you already have 4 Characters, you must discard 1 after choosing a new one.
  • If a Character is destroyed or discarded, you do not lose the castles that its power made you gain.

Influence

a. Place the Banner card or cards you have just taken in your personal area:

  • by creating a column, if these are your first captures from this Realm;
  • by adding to the corresponding column of this Realm, if you already own one.

You may thus have in front of you one column for each of the 5 Realms and no more.

b. Activate the effects of the Characters in your Council if the conditions are met, in the order of your choice, one after another (see pp. 9 to 12).

Figure captions (page 7):

  • Placing 3 Reptile Banners in the Reptile column (which already contains one): activation of the Queen twice.

c. Activate the effect of your Throne Room if the condition is met. This effect applies once per game: when you reach 3 influences in the corresponding Realm, gain 2 castles.

Special Case: Imperial Order Banners

These Banners have the particularity that they can be placed in the 5 columns of the Realms. They are, in a way, "Joker" influences for the 5 Realms.

When an Imperial Order Banner is in a column of a given Realm, it is considered an influence of that Realm.

If you recruit several Imperial Order Banner cards during your turn, you may distribute them freely among your influence columns.

You must place the Imperial Order Banner or Banners in Realm columns that you already have: you may not create a new column containing only one or more Imperial Order Banner cards.

Figure captions (page 8):

  • Placing 2 Imperial Order Banners in the Ursid column: activation of the Ursid Warrior.
  • Placing 1 Imperial Order Banner in the Marine column: activation of the Marine Sorceress.

Special Case: Religious Order Banners

They can never be influenced, and you must necessarily perform a RECRUIT action.

Realms and Characters

The five Realms (Banners) are: Reptiles, Felines, Raptors, Ursids (bears) and Marines. The printed rulebook gives "5 characters in 2 copies per realm" for the Realms, and "4 characters in 2 copies" for each of the Religious and Imperial Orders, as shown below.

Realm Characters

King

  • End of game: if you strictly have the most influences in the Realm of this King, gain 3 castles.

Queen

  • During the game: when you influence the 3rd, 4th and 5th Banner of this Queen's Realm, gain 1 castle.

Sorceress

  • During the game: when you influence the 3rd and 5th Banner of the Realm of this Sorceress, look at all the cards of the discard pile, and choose 1 card which you may RECRUIT or INFLUENCE.

Warrior

  • During the game: when you influence the 4th Banner of this Warrior's Realm, steal 1 castle from your opponent or destroy one Character or Titan of your opponent and place it in the discard pile.

Titan

  • On recruitment: gain 1 castle.
  • During the game: if you recruit a 5th different Titan, you win the game instantly.

Clarifications:

  • You may own as many different Titans as you wish. They are not placed in your Council.
  • The Religious Order has 2 additional Titans.
  • We recommend placing them in a column, as shown below, between your Throne Room and your influence area.

Orders

The Religious Order

4 characters, 2 copies each.

Papess

  • During the game: when you influence the 4th Banner of any Realm: gain 2 castles.

Warrior Monk

  • On recruitment: steal 1 castle from your opponent, or destroy one Character or Titan of your opponent and place it in the discard pile.
  • End of game: if you strictly have the most Warriors and Warrior Monks, steal 2 castles from your opponent.

Gaïa (titan)

  • On recruitment: gain 1 castle.

  • End of game: if you strictly have the most lines of influences, gain 2 castles.

General

  • During the game: when you create 1 line of 5 influences: immediately replay one turn of play.

Captain

  • On recruitment: gain 1 castle per Realm in which you strictly have the most influences.
  • End of game: gain 1 castle per Realm in which you strictly have the most influences.

Marshal

  • End of game: if you strictly have the most Characters of the Imperial Order: gain 3 castles.
