Number of Players and Consequences
In 2070 – The Game Where You Are the Hero, you can play with two, three or four players, or alone. The more of you there are, the better your chances of completing the main mission.
Each player takes on a character and takes the corresponding book. Whatever the number of players, the adventure always involves all four characters. The player(s) therefore make decisions for the whole group. The narration concerns the whole team, except for the coloured texts, which are dedicated to each character.
If you reach the end of the adventure together, the whole group has won. However, secret objectives and success points will identify the most effective player.
If you play alone, the score obtained will assess the quality of your journey.
Communicate!
Communication between players is absolutely essential for every action: sharing information and consulting each other are the keys to victory. Despite each player's secret objective, the mission is accomplished as a team, otherwise nobody wins!
Players vote aloud for each decision. In case of a tie, the game leader decides. The game leader changes regularly during play, because it is the player with the fewest success points (PR). In case of a tie in points, the youngest player is the game leader.
For good immersion, designate one player to read aloud all the uncoloured boxed texts, and another to handle the dialogue between the characters you meet.
The heroes' lines are read by the players who play them.
Finally, optional interpretation tips are on the back of each book.
Items
During the mission, you may find useful items to take if stated: take the item token and place it in front of you. These tokens are not discarded after use.
Some tokens fit together in pairs: if you find two compatible items, you obtain a new one, as indicated on the back.
Character Specifics
Each player plays a character with specific characteristics and actions. A description is on the back of each book.
When a player spots a number visible only to them in the text or the drawing, they go there alone, if the group agrees. If several players on the same square spot a number visible only to them, a group vote determines which player moves.
If the boxed text is coloured, the player reads it silently and for themselves. They may then choose to report to the group what they learned, distort the truth or stay silent! Unless otherwise stated, the decisions and actions proposed in these coloured texts are resolved alone.
Success Points (PR)
You must cooperate to accomplish your common mission. However, one member will be especially rewarded in case of victory. Individual Success Points are therefore decisive...
Before starting the game, each player draws at random one of the "Secret Objective" cards dedicated to their character and reads the instructions for themselves. The card indicates the number of PR the player has and how to acquire them. Each time they gain some, the player places the corresponding token in front of them.
Warning: the game leader may change at this point!
Important: count PR obtained through a symbol or an element of the drawing only once. Do not count them again if you pass over an already visited square.
Time
You are about to undertake a chase: be quick, otherwise failure is certain!
You start the adventure with 8 Time points.
Each time you see the Time pictogram (clock) next to a square number, the value decreases by 1 point per pictogram: place the corresponding token in the centre of the table.
When you reach 1 Time point (0 points if you play alone or with two players), go directly to 200. This limit is called the fatal threshold.
Health Level (NS)
Four states define your physical condition: Unharmed (Indemne) – Tired (Fatigué) – Wounded (Blessé) – Dying (Moribond).
At the start of the game, each player places an Unharmed token in front of them. If their NS deteriorates, they take the token for the next lower state (a Tired player takes the Wounded token).
If a character is Dying, their companions attend to them as a priority, even at the cost of losing time. If a Dying character's NS drops, the team goes to 200.
There exist extremely effective remedies, the biotubes (biotube token icon).
If you play alone or with two players: take two tokens in total | with three players: take one token in total | with four players: take none.
Ittaka, being an alien, has a remedy compatible only with his own organism. He therefore starts with an individual biotube token.
Otherwise, the decision to use a biotube is made together. If applicable, discard the token.
The beneficiary's NS increases by 1. Anticipate dangers, because it is forbidden to use a biotube when you suffer an NS loss.
Puzzles
Puzzles are indicated by a specific pictogram for each one, next to the square number. Solving a puzzle tells you a square to go to: you will see the puzzle's pictogram there. If it is not the same pictogram, you have made a mistake. Go back to the puzzle and follow the instructions.
End of the Game
There are two possibilities:
- You reach a square stating "end of the game": the mission ends in failure and all players lose.
- You reach square 258, devoted to the final victory: each player reveals their secret objective and their PR. The player with the most PR is the great winner. In case of a tie, there are several winners. If you play alone, you will be informed of the quality of your success score.
Some Tips
- Numbers may be hidden in the image: look closely so you do not miss anything.
- The three specific pictograms are reserved for certain secret objectives: ignore them if you are not concerned.
Each game lets you explore a small part of the places where the adventure takes place. Each time you play, take the opportunity to choose a new direction.
The adventure is divided into three acts. For shorter play sessions, take a break at the start of each new act. Note then the various scores, health levels and items collected, to resume the game later.
