3 Overview
A game of 1877: Stockholm Tramways consists of repeating the following steps until a game end condition has been met:
- Perform a stock round.
- Perform a number of operating rounds determined by the current phase at the end of the preceding stock round.
3.1 Game End
AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL) forms at the end of the operating round in which the first 10H train is purchased from the bank. Then the game ends immediately after the following steps:
- In operating order, each floated company performs the "purchase trains" step if it does not have a train.
- Each floated company that does not have a train is removed from the game.
- Perform a stock round in which companies may not be auctioned and stock price markers of sold shares are not moved.
- Perform three operating rounds in which companies may only run trains and pay dividends.
The game also ends immediately at the end of any round if the stock price of any company is 400kr.
The winner is the player with the highest worth. A player's worth is equal to the total stock price of his shares plus his cash.
3.2 Phases
Whenever the first train of a new type is purchased from the bank, the game enters the phase corresponding to the number of that train.
At the start of the game (in phase 2):
- only yellow tiles may be used.
- each stock round is followed by one operating round.
- Norrtälje, Saltsjöbaden, and Ålsten use the value in their yellow box.
- the train limit is four.
From phase 3:
- green tiles may also be used.
- each stock round is followed by two operating rounds.
When phase 4 starts all 2H trains rust (they are immediately removed from the game).
From phase 6:
- all tiles may be used.
- each stock round is followed by three operating rounds.
- Norrtälje, Saltsjöbaden, and Ålsten use the value in their brown box.
- the train limit is three.
When phase 8 starts all 3H trains rust.
When phase 10 starts all 4H trains rust.

5 Stock Rounds
During a stock round the players take turns in clockwise order, starting from the player with the priority deal and continuing until all players pass consecutively.
To take a turn in a stock round perform the following steps (not selling any shares and then doing nothing counts as passing):
- Sell any number of shares.
- Buy a share or auction a company (or do nothing).
At the end of his turn in a stock round, a player may never hold more certificates than the certificate limit (see the setup table for the actual limit).
At the end of each stock round perform the following steps:
- Give the priority deal to the player to the left of the last player to pass.
- Move the stock price markers of shares not available in the bank pool one step right.
- Each company that has not yet operated and has five or fewer shares in the bank pool is floated (the company receives ten times its stock price and one of its stations are placed at its home station location).
5.1 Stock Price
The stock price of a company is the value in the box of the stock market that holds its stock price marker.
5.2 Auction a Company
A player may auction a company if it has not been auctioned before.
To auction a company:
- select an available company to auction and place a starting bid of at least 0kr.
- in clockwise order starting from you each player either places a higher bid or passes until all but one player has passed.
- the highest bidder: a) pays his final bid. b) places the stock price marker of the auctioned company in a gray box of the stock market. c) takes the president's certificate and up to three more shares of the company from the bank pool and places them in front of himself. d) pays the chosen stock price for each share taken (including the president's certificate which counts as two shares).
A player may place a bid if:
- he would have at least 100kr after paying it.
- he holds fewer certificates than the certificate limit.
- the bid is a multiple of 5kr.
5.3 Buy a Share
A player may buy a share of a company if:
- he holds less than six shares of the company.
- he has not sold shares of the company in the current stock round.
- he holds fewer certificates than the certificate limit.
- the company has been auctioned.
To buy a share of a company:
- pay its stock price.
- take a share of the company from the bank pool and place it in front of you.
- if you hold more shares of the company than any other player and another player holds the president's certificate, give two ordinary certificates to that player in exchange for the president's certificate.
5.4 Sell Shares
A player may sell shares of a company if:
- he has not already sold shares of it this turn.
- after the sale, at least one player holds at least two shares of it.
- each sold share was bought in a previous stock round.
To sell shares of a company:
-
if you hold the president's certificate and after the sale, another player will hold more shares of the company than you, give the president's certificate to that player in exchange for two ordinary certificates.
Ties are broken in favor of the closest player in clockwise order starting from you.
-
place the sold shares in the bank pool.
-
receive the stock price of each sold share.
-
move the stock price marker of the sold shares half as many steps left as the number of shares sold (rounded up).
A stock price marker that would be moved past the leftmost box of the stock market stays there instead (this rule also applies to the rightmost box of the stock market and in operating rounds).
6 Operating Rounds
During an operating round, each floated company operates once.
Companies operate in order of decreasing stock price. Ties are broken in favor of the company whose stock price marker was moved the least recently. The order in which companies operate is called operating order.
To operate, a company must perform the following steps:
- Acquire a company.
- Lay or upgrade track.
- Purchase a station.
- Run trains.
- Pay dividends or withhold revenue.
- Purchase trains.
- Acquire a company.
Any decision that a company has to make is made by its president (the player who holds its president's certificate).
6.1 Routes
A sequence of two or more towns and cities connected by track is a route of a company if:
- it contains at least one city where the company has a station.
- each city passed through has an empty city circle or a station of the company.
- it contains no town or city more than once.
6.2 Lay or Upgrade Track
A company may lay or upgrade track in a hex by placing a track tile there if:
- the tile preserves all existing track segments in the hex.
- none of the track segments to be added point outside the map.
- the company has a route to one of the track segments to be added or the value of a city that the company has a route to will be increased.
- the tile is yellow and the hex is beige or the tile is green and the hex is yellow/contains a yellow tile or the tile is brown and the hex contains a green tile.
- both the tile and the hex contains a town or both the tile and the hex contains a city and has no label or the tile has the same label as the hex or neither the tile nor the hex contains any towns or cities.
To lay or upgrade track in a hex:
- if the hex does not contain a tile the company pays any terrain costs in the hex.
- replace any existing tile in the hex with the new tile.
6.3 Purchase a Station
A company may purchase a station in a city if:
- it has a route to the city.
- it has less than six stations on the map.
- it does not already have a station in the hex where the station is to be placed.
- the city where the station is to be placed has at least one empty city circle that is not the home station location of a non-floated company.
To purchase a station in a city:
- the company pays 60kr.
- place a station of the company in an empty city circle of the city.
6.4 Run Trains
Each of a company's trains may run a route of the company passing through a number of hex edges not greater than the train's number.
The revenue of a company is the sum of the values of the towns and cities run to by any of its trains.
6.5 Pay Dividends or Withhold Revenue
A company must either pay dividends or withhold revenue. A company that has no revenue must withhold revenue.
If a company withholds revenue:
- it receives its revenue.
- its stock price marker is moved one step left.
If a company pays dividends:
- each player receives a tenth of its revenue per share of it they hold.
- the stock price marker of the company is:
- not moved if its revenue is less than its current stock price.
- moved one step right if its revenue is at least its current stock price but less than double.
- moved two steps right if its revenue is at least double its current stock price but less than triple.
- moved three steps right if its revenue is at least triple its current stock price.
6.6 Purchase Trains
A company may purchase any number of trains.
A company may purchase a train if:
- it has fewer trains than the current train limit (see the train table for the actual limit).
- either the train is the cheapest train in the bank or the train is purchased from another company with the same president.
To purchase a train from the bank:
- the company pays the price of the train.
- place the train on the company's charter.
To purchase a train from another company:
- the purchasing company pays any amount not less than a fifth of the price of the train to the selling company. The price paid must be a multiple of 5kr.
- place the train on the purchasing company's charter.
A company that does not have a train must purchase a train.
If a company does not have a train, can not afford to purchase a train from the bank, and does not wish to purchase a train from another company perform the following steps:
- Choose a train that the company could purchase if it had more cash.
- The president of the company gives it the minimum amount of cash that allows it to purchase the chosen train if he is able to, otherwise, he gives it all his cash.
- The company purchases the chosen train if it is able to.
- The "purchase trains" step ends.
6.7 Acquire a Company
A company may acquire another company if:
- the president of the acquiring company holds more shares of the two companies than all other players do together.
- the acquiring company has a route to a station of the acquired company.
- the number of hexes where either of the companies has a station is at most six.
- both companies have performed the "purchase trains" step at least once.
- either both or none of the companies have performed the "pay dividends or withhold revenue" step in this operating round.
To acquire a company:
-
set the stock price of the acquiring company to the stock price of the lower-priced company plus half the stock price of the higher-priced company (rounded down).
-
each player exchanges all their shares of the two companies for half as many shares of the acquiring company, replacing any odd shares with shares of the acquired company and placing any remaining shares in the bank pool.
The president of the acquiring company should keep the president's certificate unless he should only keep one share in which case he places the president's certificate in the bank pool (he is still considered the president of the acquiring company).
-
in clockwise order starting with the president of the acquiring company, each player with a share of the acquired company must pay half the stock price of the acquiring company to replace it with a share of the acquiring company if they are able to, otherwise, they receive half the stock price of the acquiring company.
-
if the president of the acquiring company holds exactly two ordinary certificates of the acquiring company he places them in the bank pool in exchange for the president's certificate.
-
transfer the acquired company's trains and treasury to the acquiring company.
-
replace the acquired company's stations with stations of the acquiring company (stations in hexes where the acquiring company already has a station are removed instead).
-
remove the acquired company from the game.
-
if no player holds the president's certificate of the acquiring company, remove the acquiring company from the game.
-
if the president of the acquiring company did not receive cash for not being able to replace a share, he may buy any number of shares of the acquiring company for half their stock price.
