1836Jr-30 (1830 Variant)

Introduction

1836Jr–30 is an 1830 variant for two to four players set in the Netherlands and Belgium. The following rules outline the differences between 1830 and 1836Jr–30. Except as stated below, all 1830 rules apply to 1836Jr–30.

Preparing for Play

1836Jr–30 uses the 1836Jr map and various components from 1830.

The total amount of capital in 1836Jr–30 is reduced from $12,000 to (Francs or Florins) F6000 (set aside twelve F500 bills from the mix).

All six of the 1830 Private Companies are used, but only six of the 1830 Corporations: set aside the C&O and CP.

Remove the #1, #55 and #69 "double-dot" yellow tiles: only #2 and #56 may be legally placed.

Set aside one each of the type 2, type 3, type 4, type 5 and type D trains, leaving the following:

Train Type23456D
Quantity in Play543225

The initial capital distributed among the players is F1800 rather than $2400 as shown in the following table:

Limit of Stock Holding

Players are limited to owning Certificates (not shares) in accordance with the following table:

Railroad Operations—Track Construction

The New York (NY) green (#54) and brown (#62) tiles are used to upgrade Amsterdam (D6). It costs F40 to upgrade Amsterdam from yellow to green, and Amsterdam may not be upgraded while the Amsterdam Canal Company remains unbought by a Corporation.

The Baltimore/Boston (B) green and brown tiles may be used to upgrade Brussels (H6) and Lille (I3).

The green "OO" (#59) tiles may be placed on the three hexes marked with "OO": Rotterdam/Den Haag (E5), Arnhem/Nijmegen (E11), and Maastricht/Liège (H10). These tiles may be upgraded using the brown "OO" tiles (#64 through #68).

The rules for placement of the GCL (I9) and NBDS (E11) base cities use the rules for the NYC and Erie, respectively. The GCL and NBDS must pay the F40 cost to place their base cities.

The NFL base city is treated like the C&O base city.

Note that mountains cost only F60 to build and rivers (except for the Hollandsche Diep (F6) and the IJsselmeer Causeway (B8), which cost F80 each) only cost F40 to build.

The dark blue hexsides are impassable and may not be built to or across.

Railroad Operations—Tokens

The rule for placement of the Erie base token is used for the NBDS base token.

Railroad Operations—Trains, Routes and Revenue

The same train may score Amsterdam (once it has been improved to green or brown) twice as per the rules for New York City.

Paris and the Channel Ports (Dover and Harwich)

A train that includes one of these three locations at one end of its run increases the total of its run by F20 per station token (not City) on the route in the green phase, and F30 per station token (not City) in the brown phase. As with Off-Map Locations, only one Paris/Port Location may be scored (either at the beginning or the end of the run). Such a run must include at least two other scoring locations (e.g., a run from Lille to Paris is not legal) and thus requires at least a 3 train. A train may include both an Off-Map Location and a Paris/Port Location in its run, one at each end.

Railroad Operations—Purchasing Trains

A Corporation may buy no more than one train of the current type from the Bank in an Operating Round: if there are additional trains remaining of the current type, the Corporation may not buy any additional trains from the Bank until the next Operating Round. However, if the next train available from the Bank is of a new type, the Corporation may buy that train also. Thus, a Corporation may buy at most two trains from the Bank in an Operating Round: the last train of the current type and the first train of the next type.

Once a Private Company is bought or closed all Corporations may place or upgrade tiles in the Private Company's hex (or hexes) normally.

1836Jr-56 (1856 Variant)

Introduction

1836Jr–56 is an 1856 variant for two to four players set in the Netherlands and Belgium. The following rules outline the differences between 1856 and 1836Jr–56. Except as stated below, all 1856 rules apply to 1836Jr–56.

Preparing for Play

1836Jr–56 uses the 1836Jr map and various components from 1856.

The total amount of capital in 1836Jr–56 is reduced from $12,000 to (Francs or Florins) F6000 (set aside twelve F500 bills from the mix).

Only four of the 1856 Private Companies are used: set aside the Bridge and Tunnel private companies.

Only seven of the 1856 Corporations are used: set aside the BBG, CA, TGB, WR, and WGR.

Remove the #1, #55 and #69 "double-dot" yellow tiles: only #2 and #56 may be legally placed.

Set aside one each of the type 2, type 3, type 4, type 5 and type 8 trains, leaving the following:

The Toronto (TOR) green (#120), brown (#122), and grey (#124) tiles are used to upgrade Amsterdam (D6). It costs F40 to upgrade Amsterdam from yellow to green.

The London/Barrie (LON/BAR) green (#121) tiles may be used to upgrade Brussels (H6) and Lille (I3). The London (LON) brown (#126) tile may be used to upgrade Brussels and the Barrie (BAR) brown (#127) tile may be used to upgrade Lille.

Rotterdam/Den Haag may be further upgraded using the Hamilton (HAM) grey (#123) tile.

All other Cities (Groningen, Utrecht, Antwerp, Gand, Namur, Charleroi, and the Hainaut Coalfields) upgrade normally, first to green "K" or "X" City tiles, and then to either normal brown (#63) or "L" (#125) City tiles, which may be used interchangeably and without restriction.

The rules for placement of the base cities of the GCL and NBDS use the rules for the GT and THB, respectively. The GCL and NBDS must pay the F40 cost to place their base cities.

Note that mountains cost F60 to build and rivers (except for the Hollandsche Diep (F6) and the IJsselmeer Causeway (B8), which cost F80 each) cost F40 to build.

The dark blue hexsides are impassable and may not be built to or across.
