Introduction
1000? is a climbing and discard game. This means that the players are trying to get rid of all their cards, and they can only play a card from their hand if that card beats the card on the table.
In 1000? it is also possible to bluff by playing a card face down.
Setup
Shuffle all the cards and deal 7 to each player. The remaining cards stay face down, within reach of all players, in the center of the table.
Playing
The player to the left of the dealer starts the game by playing a card from their hand onto the table. The next player follows by playing a card or passing.
To play a card, the player chooses one of the following 4 ways of playing:
-
Playing a 1000:
1000 cards can always be played on top of any card in the game, including another 1000.
-
Playing any card on a 1000 card:
Any card in the game can be played on a 1000.
-
Playing a card:
Cards in the game that are not 1000 can be played on another card provided that:
a. It is a number greater than the one on the table.
b. It has at least one of the digits of the card on the table.
Example: It is Fipa's turn and a 06 card is on the table. Therefore, Fipa can play any card greater than 06 that contains a 0 and/or a 6.
(Illustration labels: "Carta da mesa" = card on the table; "Mão de Fipa" = Fipa's hand.)
-
Playing a card face down:
This face-down card may or may not be greater than the previous card, and it may or may not share a digit with it. This card may even be a 1000.
If a card is played face down, the player who played it (Player A) is claiming that it is a card that can beat the previous one, that is, it is greater and has at least one digit equal to that of the previous one.
When this happens, the next player (Player B) - and only that player - must choose either to believe Player A or to challenge them.
If they choose to believe, the face-down card is considered a 1000 card from then on. Therefore, any card can be played on it.
If they decide to challenge the card played by Player A, the card is revealed and whoever was wrong buys 3 cards from the central deck into their hand.
After that, the cards on the table are discarded and the player who bought the 3 cards starts by playing one of them onto the table.
Passing
When a player passes, they buy one card from the central deck and it is the next player's turn. If all the other players pass and the card on the center of the table is the same card that the current player (Player C) played on their previous turn, then the cards in the center of the table are discarded and Player C starts a new climb by playing any card from their hand onto the table.
End of the Game
As soon as a player gets rid of all their cards, the game ends and that player is considered the winner of the game.
