Does a sideways bird (European Roller, Grey Heron) count as one bird for goals and bonus cards?

Yes, it is one bird in one nest, even though it fills two columns. It counts once for bonus cards like Mechanical Engineer, but it does count in both columns for anything that looks at columns (a star nest still counts only once per column).
