No. The X is an additional space filled in the same turn and may go into any empty space of your choice, without restriction. "Besides" in the rules means "in addition to", not "adjacent to". Adventure-specific rules can limit where it goes (for example, in Adventure #5 it must be in a starting level or a level adjacent to a numbered one).
