Why do I cross off boxes on the Adventure #1 ASTRA card before starting, and how does its track work?

Before starting, cross off all boxes with a blue number higher than ASTRA's level. This balances difficulty: a low-level opponent crosses off boxes much more slowly. In Adventure #1 the track replaces end-game ASTRA scoring: each card you give ASTRA crosses off boxes, and ASTRA launches and wins when its last box is crossed off.
