How does boost work on fishing items with three boost slots (cards 910-913, 932, 1016, 1015, 1156)?

The FAQ says those fishing items should let you roll one extra die for each boost you pay from them, with at most one boost from a food or flora. The fish action puts a boost on the card itself.
