Do boost cubes stay on a card when it is replaced, upgraded or exchanged?
The designer confirmed this and the rulebook says the same.

Usually no. The cubes go back to the supply when a card is replaced or lost, unless the card says to reserve it or keep it. Cards you trade to another player lose their boost too.
