Does a free Traverse still resolve node-edge symbols and movement penalties?
Yes. A free Traverse is still a move, so edge symbols and 'every time you move' effects apply. Free only means you don't pay with a focus cube. Only the active explorer resolves the edge symbols; an explorer you carry doesn't, though 'when entering' effects hit both.
