Does an effect that 'places' my explorer trigger node-edge symbols?

No. Being placed skips node-edge symbols but still resolves 'when entering' effects. Unless the effect says 'revealed', you may place yourself on an unrevealed node, which is flipped face up, but you can't be placed into an empty space to explore it. A forced 'move' crosses edges normally, so edge symbols apply.
