How do runs of consecutive pairs work, and can 9-9-10-10 be beaten by 9-9-J-J?

The rulebook defines the sequence of pairs as adjacent values; players confirm how to beat one.

The pairs must be consecutive in rank, with at least two of them. A run of pairs is beaten only by a run with the same number of pairs and a higher top rank, so 9-9-10-10 loses to 10-10-J-J but 9-9-J-J is not a legal run at all. Mixing in triples does not work.
