How do the Scientist and Travel Log work, and is the trashing mandatory?

The Scientist draws one card now; you may then remove any one card from your hand, or none. The Travel Log draws two, lets you remove up to two cards from hand (zero is fine), then removes itself. Neither can trash cards you already played or your discard pile, and the Scientist stays in your deck.
