How many cats are in the fields at the start of a day?
The rulebook gives the numbers and says cats that are not rescued flee.

Two per player in each field: 4 per side with 2 players, 6 with 3, 8 with 4. Unclaimed cats are removed at the end of each day, so extra cats only appear through Anytime cards. There is no limit on how many cats a field can hold.
