You spend Influence equal to the new promotion level (1 for level 1, 2 for level 2, and so on), then take the token and its bonus, then raise Fame by 1 plus 1 per Collector in your Gallery, with optional extra Fame from spending Influence. You pay first and can't reorder. An Artist rises one level per action, and you can't promote at 0 Influence.
