Do I need to have acquired a Work of Art to bid in the auction part of the market?
The rulebook states the Work requirement only for the Reputation action; one thread applies that reading.

No. The ownership requirement applies only to the upper Reputation tile part; the auction rows need just the column's Lobby requirement, the money for the row and an Assistant.
