Do I need to track which Artist made each Work of Art I own (the red/blue Artist chips on the tiles)?
The designer said the chips aren't needed for the mechanisms; value follows the Artist's Signature.

No. The Work tile only takes up Gallery space; its value comes from the Artist's Signature token on your Art value track. Those chips are thematic. When you sell, you choose which Artist's Signature to return and are paid at that token's current value, so two same-form Works by different Artists are interchangeable tiles.
