What does a purple banner on a numbox or flag mean?
The rulebook explains banners and notes that purple banners come from Clue cards.

It only matters if you hold the matching Clue card, that is, you play that curse. Add the number tied to the symbol on your clue to the numbox number and take that card; without the matching clue take the plain number. Areas specific to other curses are generally locked behind purple banners, so mixing in expansions does not open them.
