If I gain a virtual or extra worker in the middle of an action, can I use it in that same action?

Probably not. The one reply on this reads the rules as locking in the number of workers when the Main action starts, so a worker gained mid-action would not count for it, though resources it brings could still be spent. No official ruling confirms this.
