Where do the Calendar discs start, and why is the dark disc further out with fewer players?

The light disc starts at 0 and the dark disc at 12 for 4 players, 11 for 3 and 10 for 2. Players commonly explain the difference by Ascensions also advancing the light disc, which happens more often with more players.
