Three in the standard game; the game ends the instant the third base falls. The adjustable-length option lets you agree on two, four or five instead, and the rulebook recommends four for Full Galaxy and Secret Bases modes. Some forum posts call four the standard, but that is the recommended variant, not the base rule.
