How does a skill challenge resolve, step by step?

First choose the crew taking part (each takes fatigue; other players pay 1 command to add theirs) and add their skill, including equipped cards. Then draw fate and add its number, discarding matching ability cards for +1 each and using any abilities. If the total meets or exceeds the challenge number you pass; otherwise you take the listed consequences. The p. 19 procedure changed between rulebook versions; the latest is the one to follow, and older versions tested against a fixed value of 6.
