Must you take a die on your turn even if you cannot place it?
Publisher confirmed the die must be taken; the rulebook turn steps agree.

Yes. You must take a die on your turn; the publisher says any "may" wording is a typo. If you cannot fill a space even after abilities, your turn ends and the die is not returned to the Cathedral Board.
