Do virtual explorers (Alien Research Ship, Major Research Lab) work when I assigned no dice, and can I reassign them?
The designer ruled on this directly in a BGG post.

They work whenever Explore occurs, even if you assigned no dice or someone else called it. They exist only during the phase, after Assign, so they can't select a phase or be reassigned. Major Research Lab gives one extra white explorer in total, not one per die.
