Can I research an Orb face down to the initial level, add yellow faces, or research the Clone face?

No to the initial level: you may not crossgrade or downgrade a face to the initial (no-dot) level; this is an official clarification. Yellow faces have no dots and cannot be researched, and Clone faces, which also have no dots, are used only when a face type runs out.
