Can coins from one optional square pay for another optional square on the same card?
The rulebook states this directly.

Yes. Coins gained during your turn can pay for a blank, so coins from one square can fund a later blank. Players say a blank can't be paid with the coins from that same square, though the rulebook doesn't address that case directly.
