A hero would gain a third corruption, you must take a skull from an empty supply (to drop it, or because a card needs it), or the sixth month ends before the adversary is beaten. Being unable to place skulls on a building is not a loss, only a corruption. In the final battle you lose if you take the third corruption before the last card resolves.
